As a movie lover with a deep appreciation for independent cinema, I am thrilled to hear that Cinema Guild has secured the U.S. distribution rights for “Matt and Mara.” The film’s premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year and closing the Jeonju International Film Festival in May are clear indications of its artistic merit.
The Cinema Guild obtained the rights to distribute “Matt and Mara” in the United States. This film is helmed by Kazik Radwanski and features Deragh Campbell and Matt Johnson in leading roles.
I’ve had the privilege of attending several international film festivals throughout my years as a film enthusiast and critic, and I must say that witnessing a film’s debut at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival is an unforgettable experience. The anticipation in the air, the buzz around each screening, and the opportunity to engage with fellow film lovers from all corners of the world – it’s truly a magical moment for any cinephile.
I’m deeply captivated by the story that unfolds around Mara (Campbell), an engaging creative writing professor whose world takes an unexpected twist. Our heroine finds herself reconnecting with an old flame, Matt (Johnson), a renowned author from her past. As their bond deepens, Mara is faced with the intricacies of her troubled marriage to an innovative musician.
Campbell and Johnson come together again for a new movie following their collaborations in “Anne at 13,000 ft.” directed by Radwanski.
The film’s producers from Medium Density Fibreboard Films and Cinema Guild president Peter Kelly negotiated and finalized the agreement.
“Kaz’s direction in today’s film industry stands out for its confidence and skill, according to Kelly. His partnership with Deragh Campbell and Matt Johnson continues to produce enchanting results, and we’re excited to introduce ‘Matt and Mara’ to a broad audience.”
“Matt and Mara” is set to open at New York’s IFC Center on Sept. 13.
Cinema Guild not only holds the rights to “Matt and Mara” but also to two of Radwanski’s earlier works: “Tower” from 2012 and “How Heavy This Hammer” released in 2015. These films are planned for digital distribution by Cinema Guild later in the year. Previously, they had distributed Radwanski’s film “Anne at 13,000 ft.”
As a cinephile with a deep appreciation for international cinema, I’m thrilled to share my excitement about Cinema Guild’s latest offerings. Having had the pleasure of discovering the unique works of filmmakers like Hong Sangsoo and Matías Piñeiro, I eagerly anticipate their new releases: “A Traveler’s Needs” and “You Burn Me,” respectively. I can only imagine the thought-provoking narratives and exquisite cinematography that await me. Moreover, the 4K restoration of Shinji Somai’s “Moving” is a must-see for any film history buff.
