After Ben Affleck handed over the superhero role to Robert Pattinson, he’s expressed his main concern regarding the DC universe.
During Affleck’s time as the Caped Crusader, there were several noteworthy instances that stood out (including his widely shared “Sad Affleck” interview to publicize Batman v Superman).
However, as time progresses, it’s become clear that the SnyderVerse has ended. In this new phase of Batman films, the former superhero actor has found himself contemplating the emerging cinematic universe.
And when it comes to where the DC movies failed, he thinks there’s one clear answer.
Ben Affleck says Batman movies skewed “too old”
In an interview with GQ, Affleck spoke fondly about his experience in the franchise, confessing that he genuinely cherishes the role. He even acknowledged enjoying his brief on-screen appearances in other DC productions as part of the role.
He enjoyed himself immensely. He was particularly fond of the Batman movie, specifically “Batman v Superman”. Additionally, he had a good time during his brief appearances on The Flash, and he cherished the opportunity to collaborate with Viola Davis while working on Suicide Squad for a couple of days.
From a creative standpoint, I genuinely appreciate the concept and the drive behind it – portraying an older, battered Bruce Wayne who was significantly damaged. We truly pursued this direction in our initial film.
To put it in my perspective as a fan, I believe there’s a reason he feels the Batman-centric films didn’t quite soar during his time, and it boils down to the mature tone of the SnyderVerse films. In essence, they became a tad too complex for some.
He clarified that the issue was the film became too mature for a significant portion of the viewers. In fact, his own child was frightened by it at the time. When he realized this, he exclaimed, “Oh dear, we’ve got a predicament on our hands.
It seems that at this point, a filmmaker aimed to carry on in the same direction while a studio sought to attract the youth demographic again, but their goals were conflicting. Essentially, you had two parties with different ideas, which can be quite problematic.
