Following numerous partnerships spanning several decades, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are set to reunite for an upcoming film titled “The Rip” soon. In this project, they have joined forces once more, not only acting together but also serving as producers.

The Rip” is a gritty crime thriller from the acclaimed director who brought us “Narc” and “Smokin’ Aces“, reminiscent of 1970s cop thrillers. Earlier, an intriguing glimpse was shared featuring Affleck and Damon side by side. Recently, during the Netflix Tudum event in 2025, a fresh update on “The Rip” emerged. During the Netflix Tudum 2025 livestream over the weekend, Affleck and Damon, along with some of their fellow cast members, offered a tantalizing glimpse into the upcoming film.

The actors mentioned that the new movie takes inspiration from one of our timeless classics, specifically “Training Day”, during their stage presentation.

Apart from unveiling a sneak peek teaser for the upcoming series “The Rip“, they also revealed its release date: Jan 16, 2026. In a playful mood, the actors hinted that Netflix didn’t want them to reveal the trailer, but they decided to go ahead with it, relying on us not to leak it. Although the teaser was streamed live, it remains exclusive to Netflix and isn’t available online. Meanwhile, Affleck and Damon had a delightful exchange with Cookie Monster during the Tudum livestream as Sesame Street has now partnered with Netflix. You can watch their interaction in the video provided below.

In addition to Affleck and Damon, the cast of The Rip includes Steven Yeun (known for his roles in The Walking Dead and Invincible), Teyana Taylor (notable for her work in A Thousand and One and The Book of Clarence), Catalina Sandino Moreno (renowned for her performances in Silent Night and Maria Full of Grace), (a familiar face from The Flash and The Young and the Restless), Nestor Carbonell (recognized for his roles in Shogun and The Morning Show), Lina Esco (widely recognized for her work on S.W.A.T.), Scott Adkins (anticipated in the upcoming film John Wick: Chapter 4), and Kyle Chandler (known for his role in Lanterns).

Why Is It Called ‘The Rip’?

In a conversation with Tudum, Carnahan explained that the title “The Rip” is a term used by Miami cops to mean ‘confiscating the bad guy’s possessions’, which is often referred to as ‘taking it’ or ‘ripping it’. This refers specifically to situations where money, drugs, or weapons are seized.

In a revealing discussion about the film’s narrative, the director shared that the movie is based on a profoundly personal episode in the life of his friend. He served as both a father and the head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department. The story draws inspiration from his life, as well as his passion for the gripping ’70s cop thrillers that emphasized character development and interpersonal relationships. These movies, such as Serpico, Prince of The City, and more recently, Heat directed by Michael Mann, were iconic touchstones of that era.

Affleck and Damon first encountered each other as neighbors in Cambridge, Massachusetts, prior to either of them achieving fame. Their paths crossed again when they collaborated on the blockbuster movie “Good Will Hunting,” which catapulted both into Hollywood stardom. Although each went on to star in numerous successful films individually, they occasionally teamed up for movie roles as well. After their collaboration in “Good Will Hunting,” they worked together again in “Dogma,” and there are rumors of a sequel that could bring them back together. In addition, they co-starred in “The Last Duel” and “Air.

In his words, collaborating with Matt and Ben – two exceptional filmmakers who served not only as creative partners but also studio leaders – turned out to be the perfect combination. As for the Netflix movie “The Rip“, Carnahan stated that he had an incredibly smooth experience throughout the project. These two A-listers were particularly supportive, taking great care of him and endorsing his decisions at every stage.

The Rip is coming to Netflix for streaming later this year.
