As a spectator of this grand sailing adventure, I find myself constantly amazed by the diverse characters that grace the deck of Parsifal III. Each week, we witness tales as old as time, yet somehow uniquely modern, and this week was no exception.
Receiving criticism is never fun — although it can be fun for us to watch — and this week’s two main stories are really about how different people respond to it. I never thought I’d say this, but we can all aspire to be more Cloyce than Emma.
After Daisy shares her thoughts with Cloyce about enhancing his cooking skills for dinner, it’s unclear if he fully grasped her suggestion. She employs a compliment sandwich approach by expressing confidence in his abilities, mentioning that he holds a vital role on the boat. However, constructive criticism is something new to Cloyyce, causing him great embarrassment. In the team meeting, Glenn commends both the deck and interior teams but singles out the chef for improvement, urging him to work on his preparation and think creatively.
Cloyce acknowledges the criticism as helpful, but his day turns sour. Despite a new charter scheduled for tomorrow that requires a formal birthday dinner, he can’t afford to relax completely. He brings the preference forms to the dinner and at some point disappears to work (apparently at the host stand) on arrangements. Daisy appreciates his efforts to address the feedback but feels the atmosphere is being dampened. Later on the boat, Cloyce works on ravioli preparation until 1:30 am.
The atmosphere between Danni and Keith is strained, as their contrasting personalities suggest. Danni, who prefers to live life without hesitation or fear of danger or future repercussions, opted to go without underwear beneath her bright dress – a choice that mirrors Keith’s cautious nature and forward-thinking attitude. After their shared hot tub experience, Keith expresses his unwillingness to engage in complicated relationships, referring to the potential three-way dynamics as “triangular.” Danni denies any involvement with Gary and calls their incident a slip-up. Left unfulfilled, Danni seeks solace by texting Anthony, a man she met at a club during episode two, affectionately dubbing him “Big Dog.” Danni’s flirtatious tactics are indeed intriguing. In another turn of events, Davide once again sleeps without clothing, displaying reckless behavior towards any roommate but particularly his boss – risking an inopportune exposure of himself. It’s possible that the unpredictable Danni and the carefree Davide might make a suitable pair.
During the early hours, Gary confides in Keith that his encounter with Danni was completely insignificant, however, it appears their relationship might not recover. Keith has repeatedly rejected Danni’s advances and senses her discomfort. She shares this unease with Daisy, stating that she finds him unattractive due to his apparent insecurity. This is a stretch, as Keith doesn’t give off an insecure vibe; instead, he seems like an ordinary person who wants to steer clear of complications and wasn’t particularly fond of Danni. Daisy reminds her that Danni didn’t kiss a random person: Gary shares both professional and personal ties with Keith. Without being asked, Diana echoes Daisy’s sentiments. While Keith might fear messiness, I’m delighted that Diana isn’t.
As Cloyce takes on fresh tasks – such as preparing a cake in advance, Emma’s work ethic remains stagnant. Despite her lack of progress, she manages to meet the minimal expectations set. Gary doesn’t rouse Emma for docking since he understands they can manage without her. Before the arrival of guests, he offers another gentle driving lesson. However, Emma continues to struggle with the steering wheel, causing her distress. Later, Gary poses a question to Glenn: “How do you instill initiative?” Emma spends most of her time engrossed in her phone, smoking, or sipping tea. The narrative unfolds a harsh portrayal of her laxity and excuses for not performing tasks. If they don’t observe significant improvement today, Glenn hints that he might begin searching for a replacement.
The situation doesn’t appear promising for Emma. When Glenn asks her to manage the mizzen sail as it lowers, she requests a step-by-step explanation. Since Gary explained it to her just an hour ago, Glenn interprets this incident as another indication that she’s struggling to grasp things promptly. After noticing Emma standing idle, Gary offers some advice, but Emma refutes the suggestion that she lacks urgency. She feels it’s unjust that he hasn’t provided this feedback sooner and is hurt by the notion that Gary and Keith are covering for her mistakes. I always support the female deckhands, but Emma serves as an example of women making errors despite their rights. She voices her discontent to Daisy, who understands Gary’s perspective, and advises her to excel at her job and thus contradict his opinion.
The main characters of this charter are Sherry and Philip, who are hosting a party for their daughter Alana’s sixteenth birthday. Daisy recalls getting served alcohol at an Italian restaurant on her sixteenth birthday, which is why she had Danni serve welcome champagne to all the guests. It’s surprising that Alana and her friend Addy declined the champagne. Glenn questions Danni, asking if they served minors alcohol, as the drinking age in Spain is 18 and the ship has a no underage drinking policy. Despite offering them alcohol, neither Alana nor Addy partook, which leaves Danni feeling blamed for something that she was instructed to do by Daisy.
Sherry adorns the stews for the dinner party and asks that it takes place inside. Last week, Danni irritated Diana by playing around, inhaling helium from balloons, and chatting while decorating. This also annoyed Daisy, as they were running short on time but still managed to get it done. Despite looking adorable, it seems peculiar to be indoors when the weather appears pleasant. It’s puzzling why they don’t want to take advantage of the superyacht views instead.
As a cinephile enthusiast, I must say, I’ve never tasted a dinner quite like Cloyce’s masterpiece. It wasn’t just good; it was extraordinary! The gelatinized tomato tartar, artistically molded into a flower with radishes, left all other dishes in the dust. But that wasn’t all he had up his sleeve – a cabbage broth infused with lemon juice transformed into a stunning fuchsia hue when poured. His creativity truly shone through. The ahi tuna with tobiko on a large homemade rice cracker was another showstopper, and the squid ink pasta was an absolute hit. Daisy was spot-on; I knew he had this culinary genius within him all along!
18-and-above attendees head to a waterfront club, allowing Alana and Addy to enjoy the hot tub and breathe helium from balloons. If you found Danni’s behavior reminiscent of a teenager, you would be spot on. At around 2:30 a.m., Keith departs in a small boat to retrieve the club-goers. Gary notices the “Parsifal III” approaching another vessel head-on and alerts Danni to rouse Glenn. In a hurry, Gary dashes toward the ship’s bow with fenders, fearing a collision – an unusual scenario compared to the usual “two ships passing in the night.” This time, Emma is awakened and involved, raising questions about whether she will respond swiftly and decisively.
From The Galley
Did Philip’s interest in examining the intricate details of sailing seem eerily similar to Colin Robinson’s character from “What We Do In The Shadows” to you as well?
Knowing that my friends couldn’t discern between store-bought and freshly-squeezed orange juice at our Friendsgiving drinks, eased my concerns about purchasing less expensive OJ.
Cloyce shared that he celebrated his 16th birthday by acting as a chef at a Mexican culinary event for 450 attendees, and he even got to stroll the catwalk alongside supermodels in swimwear. I must admit, it’s puzzling why bikini models were present at a culinary festival.
