As we approach the final episode of the season, the 45-minute mark in the second half of the game, so to speak in Brazil, “Below Deck Down Under” delivers an action-packed week. It’s full of crew squabbles, seasick passengers, evolving or deteriorating romantic relationships aboard, and some unexpected technical glitches. We seem to be emerging from the chaos of the Lara and Tzarina altercation, feeling as if I’m coming back to life after a long sleep. This week, the crew manages to stay united despite ongoing personal tensions simmering beneath the surface.
From a film enthusiast’s perspective, the focus in “Come Swell or High Water” lies predominantly on the evolving dynamics between our couples and their fates as the season progresses. As they ready themselves for the next charter, Bri shares her reservations about Harry with the interior team, while he expresses his optimism to the deck crew regarding their relationship. In a private reflection, he mentions his lack of concern over discussing exclusivity with Bri, feeling that their shared understanding makes this conversation unnecessary. This situation echoes last season’s drama with Margot, but as events unfold later in the evening, things seem to work out positively — Bri agrees to be Harry’s “exclusive partner,” a term she finds comfortable because it’s less committing than boyfriend and girlfriend. My query is why she would advance in their relationship knowing it might require her to retreat slightly in the future. Furthermore, “exclusive partners” seems more like a Census Bureau classification than an emotional label, but who knows?
In the story, Bri continues her journey with Harry, while Alesia chooses to pause her budding relationship with Nate, which is unfortunate because he had been envisioning a suburban life complete with a white picket fence and five blonde children. However, it’s important to acknowledge that this dream might be more self-centered than realistic, given Alesia’s lifestyle. Throughout the day, Tzarina subtly advises her, acting as a protective older sister. During dinner, while the men head off for their usual guys’ discussion in the bathroom, Tzarina confronts Alesia point-blank: “Do you truly want him?” Eventually, Alesia musters the strength to tell Nate that she lacks the mental readiness to commit to a relationship with him. Although he’s disheartened, he accepts it graciously, demonstrating his gentlemanly character.
Ultimately, Nic and Marina appear steady throughout, but Marina, ever prudent, recognizes that it’s unwise to harbor excessive hopes given their homes are situated on separate continents. As for Nic, he’s unsure of his post-season plans, while Marina isn’t fully prepared to conclude things, proceeding with caution instead.
Let’s rewind a bit to discuss the conclusion of the conflict, the Great War between Interior and Galley, as portrayed in this week’s episode. Lara is still tearful over receiving the helmet and feels unappreciated by Jason for her good work. The editors, who have a history of criticizing the chief stew, counter by showing several instances where Jason did congratulate her. Simultaneously, Tzarina confides in her mother about the distress she feels due to this situation, as it reminds her of past bullying experiences at school. Later in the day, the crew gathers for drinks near the Jacuzzi, which had been cleaned earlier; it was quite unsightly before cleaning. Jason drops by to join them and senses that Lara is still troubled. He takes her aside to encourage her to apologize to Tzarina for their disagreement and move past it. “Every conflict begins with a small spark,” he reminds her, implying that the initial argument was minor and can be resolved. He also emphasizes his faith in her abilities, stating that he’s confident she can overcome this situation because she’s doing a fantastic job overall.
In a private conversation within their shared cabin, Lara reveals another layer of the ongoing conflict with Tzarina: she discloses that Tzarina had befriended her former unfaithful lover soon after their breakup, much like how Tzarina’s actions toward João last season left a sour taste. However, as the season nears its end, both women come to realize that maintaining this grudge is fruitless. Lara chooses to take the high road and offer an apology, which catches me off guard, as I had expected their animosity to persist until the end of their Seychelles adventure. However, Lara’s heartfelt remorse moves Tzarina as well, prompting her to reciprocate with an apology. By the time they resolve their differences, both women acknowledge their roles in the deterioration of their relationship. I find myself feeling a sense of pride for them.
On the final day of pickup when the sun comes up, Bri and Harry summarize their department’s private discussion about exclusivity, although it wasn’t crucial given that everyone else on the team had watched their conversation (silently) from the crew mess the previous night. Adair, as usual, mentions that there isn’t much distinction between being in a relationship and being exclusive. Additionally, Nate shares information about Alesia, and to add more romantic complexity, Lara confesses to Tzarina her erotic dream about Jason, which leaves her rattled for the entire day, especially during the morning preference-sheet meeting. In their uniforms, Lara, Tzarina, and Jason exchange warm embraces. Playfully teasing Lara, Tzarina jokes that her dream was somewhat like that…
As the team readies for the arrival of Win, CEO of JLab, accompanied by his wife Lori and friends, Nate discovers that the tender isn’t functioning, necessitating a replacement rental vessel for the charter. Jason is investigating the issue when the guests arrive, exclaiming excitedly, “Seychelles!”, a clear sign of their anticipation that sent shivers down his spine. The guests are pleased with the boat and the delicious meal prepared by Tzarina and Alesia, who is proud of her culinary advancements in the kitchen, although they are slightly disheartened due to the boat’s rocking motion as soon as it sets sail. I feel they could have been more considerate asking Lara about the stabilizers on the Katina and whether they are functioning properly. While I understand that high-end customers expect maximum comfort, you must remember that we’re on a boat – what can Jason do but navigate the natural movement of the water?
During the Seychelles Night-themed dinner, the boat’s continuous rocking left guests feeling queasy and unable to fully savor Tzarina’s curry, which she had prepared 16 times that season. One guest, Trevor, even needed to leave the table mid-meal to vomit. Despite these challenges, they managed to appreciate the food as best they could. As the night drew to a close, Tzarina thanked Jason for his conversation with Lara, which helped them overcome an obstacle. Earlier in the day, Bri had expressed apprehension about introducing Harry to New Jersey, and she momentarily handed him over to her mother on the phone. With excitement, Harry announced they were now exclusive, but Bri’s mom seemed unfazed, leaving it unclear whether the call ended just as Harry was sharing this news or if Bri’s mom was aware of something that Harry wasn’t – making for an awkward moment either way.
As a cinephile, I spent the restless night with the boat rocking, even disrupting Jason’s slumber. The following morning, Tzarina and Lara engaged in another short spat over breakfast service communication. This time, it seems to me that the blame lies with Tzarina, given she’s missing her radio. This means poor Lara has to climb all those stairs repeatedly just to relay the message that our guests are ready. Tzarina takes it as a personal affront, which is truly frustrating. Come on, let it go! We only have one day left to make this experience unforgettable for our guests!
After the guests have concluded their breakfast, Bri and the deck team make their way towards the beach to arrange a pirate-themed scavenger hunt for the guests, promising an enjoyable experience. The captain cautions Nate about the rapid tide at the chosen beach, emphasizing the importance of perfect timing to allow the rental tender to safely enter and exit. Nate waits near the steering wheel, anticipating Harry and Adair’s completion of offloading and setup, when, as expected, the tide begins to recede. The shallow waters prove too much for the tender, causing it to get stuck almost immediately. Meanwhile, on the Katina, the guests are eager to start their adventure. In a sneak peek of the season finale, we learn that the tender was unable to leave the sandbank due to Nate’s oversight, representing a substantial error.
On the final day of the season, Nate is safe from being fired, but according to the preview, numerous calamities are about to befall the team during their last night out – incidents that appear to stem largely from Alesia’s unwavering dedication to living life in the fast lane (YOLO). I’m eager to find out how these relationships unfold. Additionally, I’m hoping for a glimpse into Adair’s mind – where she might be heading next, what actions she might take, and perhaps some insights into her thoughts on various topics.
