Below Deck Down Under Recap: Power Couples

As the final episode of the season draws near, it can be divided into three main acts:

1. The first act revolves around Anthony and Tzarina’s conflicts.
2. In the second act, Wihan finds himself at odds with everyone else.
3. The third act features Lara and Tzarina locking horns.
A good season of this franchise typically sees tension ebb and flow. To illustrate, consider last year’s 11th season of Below Deck, where Fraser and Barbie would argue fiercely for a while, then reconcile temporarily, only to reignite their disputes later. However, the current season of Below Deck Down Under has been stuck in a vicious cycle, with issues arising, escalating, and recurring repetitively, becoming monotonous.
In my opinion, what truly makes a season of Below Deck exceptional is a crew capable of rising above their internal squabbles and presenting a united front against the annoying guests, which this particular crew has consistently failed to achieve.

As a movie enthusiast, if I were to rephrase the given passage, it would be:

In the world of “Katina,” a harmonious bond might seem like a far-off reality, but this crew sure knows their way around ship romance! When we start off with the romantic undercurrents of “Smoochies” (oh boy!), the evening’s amorous ambiance is palpable, even amidst Lara and Tzarina’s simmering disagreement. Alesia and Nate engage in flirtatious banter, and though she remains cautious after Johnny, her resistance to his captivating charm crumbles. “I pressed the ‘fuck-it’ button,” she confides in the girls following their kiss. Meanwhile, Marina shares that her own apprehensions revolve around her father’s departure from her mother, but she’s ready to embrace the present and explore things with Nic, whose once bothersome demeanor has noticeably softened (okay, maybe I was a bit harsh). Harry and Bri snuggle in bed and discuss traveling together post-season, though Bri feels uneasy learning that Harry is accustomed to hostel stays. After all, there’s no room service!

The crew enjoys some downtime as the one-day charter guests won’t be arriving until tomorrow morning. During the meeting about preference sheets, Jason assumes a stern school principal tone and encourages department heads to organize themselves efficiently. Lara finds it intriguing that Tzarina can both fight and remain polite, but she doesn’t want to disappoint Jason. In a private moment, Lara reveals to the audience that on her previous boat, she was close friends with the captain and had considerable freedom to manage operations, which gives insight into her expectations for the yacht Katina.

In an attempt to reconcile with Jason, I called Tzarina aside, hoping we could rekindle our relationship once more. Regrettably, we seemed to make no progress yet again. The core of our disagreement lies in our differing viewpoints: We both believe the other is at fault, and I find her personal attacks frustrating when all I desire is a way to collaborate harmoniously. I feel Tzarina has not acknowledged her mistake of accusing me of lateness, yet she reminds me that I haven’t apologized for our conflicts either. I can envision a scenario where Tzarina genuinely says sorry, but it feels more probable that a dolphin would flip our boat over than Lara ever admitting fault. As a result, our conversations are restricted to essential matters only.

As evening approaches, Alesia and Nate enjoy a cozy gathering of cheese, wine, and conversation on the sun deck, an event that serves as both a romantic date and entertainment for those observing from the crew mess. Their affection grows, and Nate, who is smitten quickly, expresses his intention to find a life partner. However, things take a turn when he refers to their kissing as “smoochies,” which leaves Alesia feeling uncomfortable. In fact, she bluntly says, “My feelings toward you just reversed.” Marina and Nic spend more time together too, with Marina leaving a sweet note on his door that reads, “Your smile illuminates the room and makes my day brighter, beijos (kisses).

As a dedicated fan, I’m delighted to see Marina getting the recognition she deserves beyond just her romantic storylines. Conversing with Bri, I was taken aback by Lara’s surprise at Marina’s exceptional performance at work. Considering Marina joined the Katina with a wealth of experience and an unwavering determination, it’s puzzling where this surprise stems from. However, Lara reluctantly concedes, in her signature sassy tone, that “perhaps Jason does have some knowledge about yachting.”

The very next morning, Lara not only retains Marina in her service but also elevates her position, promoting her to the role of second stew. This promotion might seem a bit overdue, given the late stage of the game, but it’s a promotion nonetheless, and Marina is ecstatic about it.

Following the guests’ arrival, Harry takes on a secondary role and excels, managing to guide the boat away from the dock for the first time that day. This strong beginning to the day makes one almost forget the tension later when Lara brings up the crew mess issue with Alesia yet again during lunchtime. One might wonder why Lara insists on involving Alesia in this matter, when the mysterious Adair could be tasked instead. When Alesia informs Lara of her own knowledge regarding the dirty tables, Lara reminds her that she must clean them, particularly since she had opted out of morning chores. To maintain her peace of mind, Alesia complies, aware that the dispute over the crew mess is more about Lara and Tzarina’s power struggle than it is about the actual mess itself.

Breathing heavily, Lara hurried over to the bridge to seek advice from Jason about her issue. However, he didn’t provide the validation she was looking for, instead pointing out that Alesia wasn’t responsible for giving the entire crew mess a thorough cleaning. Left speechless by Jason’s resistance to her strong-willed demands, Lara, being a dedicated team player, reluctantly agreed, “I can manage it, but I don’t understand why.” Jason recognized the situation for what it was: a battle of authority between two department heads.

The situation is becoming more intense as Jason, Harry, and Marina lead the guests on a diving trip. Previously, Tzarina had been justified in her stance about the crew mess, making it all the more aggravating when she instructs Alesia to swim rather than clean the area as promised to Lara. Tzarina is aware that this issue is escalating, and by openly defying her promise to Lara, Tzarina is giving Lara a valid reason to question why Alesia can go swimming but not clean the tables. This senseless, misguided action serves only to provoke Lara, who was already frustrated with Adair’s tardiness in helping with the cabins, and nearly pushes her to lose patience.

It appears that only Lara appears to be concerned about the situation at hand. As Lara vigorously cleans, Alesia confides in Tzarina that she wants to steer clear of Nate due to their romantic past, despite having just enjoyed herself on the hamster wheel with him moments ago. Meanwhile, Marina expresses frustration because Nic hasn’t acknowledged her note left on his door. In Portuguese, she queries, “Who does he think he is in line for bread?” This phrase implies someone who overestimates their worth. I admire this woman’s self-assuredness.

As a cinephile immersed in the world aboard the Katina, I find myself mirroring the roles of the crew: Marina is busy assisting in the galley, readying for another tropical-themed dinner due to yet another storm, all while Tzarina casually remarks, “You’ve truly become second stewardess.” From the crew mess, Jason accidentally overhears their conversation and queries when Marina earned this new position. “Normally, I would be consulted,” he shares with Tzarina, who nonchalantly shrugs her shoulders. When he inquires Lara about it, she insists they had discussed it earlier, but Jason remains unconvinced.

In the typical relationship between a captain and chief stew, it seems there’s an issue at hand due to Jason needing to persuade Lara to bring Marina into service. By promoting Marina without discussing it with him first, Lara appears as if she’s recognized her greatness all along, without giving credit to the captain for setting the department on the right course. When Nate promoted Harry without consulting Jason, it didn’t seem to cause any issues. Despite appearing almost incapable of apologizing sincerely, Lara manages a soft, barely audible “sorry”. Later, Lara questions Marina about whether she feels that Jason doesn’t like her, but Marina can’t understand this sentiment, even though she’s had disagreements with the captain. It appears quite obvious that Lara believes Jason dislikes her simply because he refuses to blindly acknowledge her as being right.

The dinner concludes pleasantly, featuring limbo dancing and content guests. Nic surprises Marina in the crew lounge post-work by revealing he’d kept her note in his phone case, a sweet gesture that brings relief to her. However, not all boat romances appear promising:

The following morning, Lara queries Harry about whether they’ve had the discussion on being exclusive with Bri. Although he believes they’ll be exclusive, he hasn’t communicated this yet. This conversation might prove more difficult than anticipated; Bri shares with Lara that she isn’t ready for a full-blown relationship so soon following her breakup from her former fiancé. “I’m in no hurry for a label,” she clarifies.

The charter has come to an end swiftly since it started. Initially feeling a bit jittery, Harry performs admirably as he guides the boat in. The passengers reward the crew with $19,000, resulting in each team member receiving a bonus of $1,460. Jason presents Lara with a disco helmet because she didn’t discuss Marina’s promotion with him, which doesn’t sit well with her. She is someone who struggles to laugh at herself, and the helmet only seems to reinforce her belief that Jason dislikes her, although it’s not a personal matter – Harry often receives the helmet from Jason. This week even the fish got helmets! To add insult to injury, Tzarina, who can be quite harsh, tells her, “Congratulations… You’re going to look amazing.” Ranting to Bri, Lara complains that Jason never acknowledges her good work. It appears she is blatantly forgetting the time when she stormed out of a meeting due to being upset with Tzarina and, without hesitation, Jason followed her into the cabin, encouraged her confidence in her job, and showed no anger that she had challenged his authority so disrespectfully. Lara needs to learn to let go of herself, urgently.
