Occasionally, it’s just as thrilling to witness a game performing something right as it is to see it do something unique. Meet “Beloved Rapture“, an indie RPG inspired by classic JRPGs, developed by Rapturous Studio and published by 2 Left Thumbs (Picayune Dreams, Tower of Kalemonvo) – a piece of which I was fortunate enough to sample at PAX East.
As I delved into this game, I realized after over 30 minutes of immersive play that it wasn’t just a demo – it was the entire game! Whenever one fancied, they could choose to quit, or in my case, once the clock ticked past the point where my curiosity surpassed my initial apprehension about asking the booth attendant how long the “demo” lasted. To my surprise, I discovered that the full version had been available on Steam since October.
At PAX East, I tried out a demo-like session that put me in the shoes of an aspiring hero, wandering through what seemed like the starting village and its vicinity, battling common foes scattered about. This was essentially a straightforward tutorial area, one you’ve undoubtedly encountered in numerous other RPGs. There wasn’t anything particularly novel about it; it was a standard opening encounter that, at its core, you’ve likely experienced multiple times before. However, this isn’t necessarily a drawback for Beloved Rapture. Instead, it’s a familiar introduction that, in the context of this game, feels comfortably routine.
Upon starting the game, what immediately caught my eye was its stunning visuals. From the battle characters, backdrops, to character designs, the pixel art in Beloved Rapture is vivid and aesthetically pleasing at every glance. After I had finished admiring the graphics, the next thing that struck me was how nostalgic the overall experience felt. The blend of these eye-catching visuals with the battle mechanics, which follow a simple Active Time Battle (ATB) system, takes me back to the good old days when Final Fantasy hadn’t even started driving a car (let alone going on a sponsored road trip with its three closest friends).
In simpler terms, I found it challenging to grasp the narrative or any events happening within the game. Despite my expectations not being too high for a demo to present a complete storyline, I felt there was minimal context given about the character, the situation, objectives, or anything similar during my playthrough. Consequently, I wouldn’t be able to summarize even a basic plot if asked, which is unfortunate because this game appears to be heavily influenced by the JRPG era known for its excellent writing and storytelling.
Beloved Rapture is currently available on Steam.
