Beloved Buffy the Vampire Slayer Character Returns But Not in the Reboot

For more than two decades now, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” have ended their run. Yet, these beloved series continue to captivate a large fanbase, spawning numerous spin-offs across various platforms. Excitement is growing for the upcoming reboot, as Sarah Michelle Gellar has officially agreed to reprise her iconic role. However, despite reports suggesting David Boreanaz’s reluctance to return as Angel, his character will make a comeback in an alternate manner.

Dynamite Entertainment revealed plans to launch two fresh comic book series inspired by Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, picking up where the Scoobies’ exciting journeys left off. These new comics will debut under their collaboration with Disney’s 20th Television. Additionally, it has been confirmed that an esteemed comic writer with Eisner Awards to their name will take charge of both series’ scripts. Renowned artist David Nakayama is also set to illustrate the covers for these upcoming titles.

Who is writing the new Buffy and Angel comics?

Kelly Thompson, known for her work on Absolute Wonder Woman and co-creator of Jeff the Land Shark, will pen both the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel comics. A highly sought-after writer in American comics, she’s also skilled at adapting cherished TV and film properties into comic books. In the past, Thompson has written comics based on Star Wars, Jem and the Holograms, and a solo series for Scarlett from G.I. Joe. However, her work on these Buffy and Angel adventures is a deeply personal passion project for Thompson.

Thompson reminisced about his beginnings as a writer, seeking to discover his voice and the stories that resonated with him. No character from those early days captivated him like Buffy Summers did. He became deeply enamored with her, and once he learned she had an ex-boyfriend who was now a supernatural detective in LA, he yearned for more. If only I could absorb it all! However, unlike other worlds that held my interest, the universe of Buffy and Angel remained evergreen. Whenever I returned to it, there was always something fresh or overlooked to discover. My wish is that this new narrative we’re creating can have the same lasting impact on old and new fans alike.

Thompson hasn’t specified yet whether her upcoming comics will align with the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel TV series timelines. Nevertheless, Dynamite Entertainment has confirmed they’ll soon disclose the interior artists and release dates for these new comic books. There’s a chance this announcement could happen as early as San Diego Comic-Con 2025.
