Sony Pictures Television (SPT) has found its Carlota.
In this new development, Belinda, a renowned Latin pop artist from Spain with Mexican roots, has been chosen to play the leading role of “Carlota,” the Empress of Mexico, in SPT’s highly anticipated Latin American series that promises to be their most ambitious project yet.
On Tuesday, May 20, our studio presented the unique, high-profile project as one of the top choices to potential viewers at the LA Screenings.
Production for a 10-episode, 45-minute dramatic series based on the true tale of Carlota of Habsburg, Mexico’s solitary Empress, is scheduled to begin towards the end of the year.
Or:
The 10 x 45-minute dramatic series about Carlota of Habsburg, the lone Empress of Mexico, will commence production later this year, and it is inspired by real events.
The story portrays a visionary queen ahead of her era, named Carlota, who arrives in Mexico with high ideals and a strong desire to transform the world. However, as political strife intensifies and cultural frictions escalate, she becomes ensnared in a much more intricate reality. This includes a love story that deviates from traditional fairy-tale narratives. As Carlota and her husband Maximilian endeavor to establish a new empire, they are pulled into a perilous network of ambition, loyalty, and deceit.
John Rossiter, executive VP of Sony Pictures Television (SPT) for Distribution, Networks & Production in Latin America, announced that ‘Carlota’ will be filmed in Mexico, Colombia, and Spain. He stated, ‘Carlota’ is a significant achievement as we aim to become a dominant entertainment producer in Latin America. Furthermore, this project demonstrates our commitment to creating high-quality stories that resonate not just with Latin American audiences but with viewers worldwide.
Rossiter stated to EbMaster that this series is designed for a global audience,” said EbMaster, acknowledging that SPT Latin America has been motivated by the increasing number of popular local shows now streaming on various platforms. The organization plans to take advantage of benefits unique to each region.
Belinda (“Killer Women”) is the star of an outstanding ensemble from Spain and Latin America, featuring Jaime Lorente (“Money Heist”) playing Maximiliano, Miguel Ángel Silvestre (“Sense8”) portraying Alfred Van Der Smissen, and Mexico’s Mabel Cadena (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) taking on the role of Josefa.
In this rephrased version, I have attempted to maintain a conversational tone while clarifying the roles and credits of each cast member in an easy-to-understand manner.
The directors, Alejandro Bazzano from “Money Heist,” and Ana Lorena Pérez Ríos, who worked on “Like Water for Chocolate” for HBO Max, have been linked to take charge of the upcoming series.
Beyond just the skill and top-notch production, the heart of ‘Carlota’ lies in a deeply felt and genuine narrative. We think this story will strike a chord with Mexican viewers and potentially captivate audiences worldwide as well,” Rossiter expressed, pointing out that historical costume dramas often find success on streaming platforms.
The latest large-scale production by SPT Latin America, titled ‘Yo No Soy Mendoza’, was launched on Netflix last month. It quickly appeared on Netflix’s global list of Top 10 Non-English TV Shows and is also among the top 10 in 14 countries across Latin America.
The story of “Yo No Soy Mendoza” revolves around Julian Garcia, a charming debt collector who unexpectedly finds himself in a predicament. He’s kidnapped and compelled to impersonate corrupt casino owner Esteban Mendoza, even going so far as to marry Mendoza’s fiancée. This plunges him into Mendoza’s perilous realm where he must evade enemies and manage his former life alongside his new persona. However, as the story unfolds, Julian uncovers that amidst the turmoil, what truly matters is a battle for something deeply personal to him.
According to Rossiter, our project queue is rapidly expanding, and we’re facing the dilemma of determining the order in which to tackle these tasks, even including unscripted shows, he noted.
The “Carlota” team is headed by Coty Cagliolo, who holds the position of senior VP & managing director for SPT’s production in Latin America and the U.S. Hispanic market. Additionally, Carlos Quintanilla Sakar serves as the VP & head of content and production for Latin America and the USH. In this role, he functions as both executive producer and showrunner. Alongside him are executive producers Alejandro García and Madelaine Contreras.
