HBO has found great success with anthology series like The White Lotus, but before that show, they had another popular, though more controversial, anthology series. To create a truly compelling anthology, a show needs a solid, repeatable formula that can be used for future installments.
The White Lotus excels at telling interconnected stories, all set in different, luxurious hotels from the same chain. Each season features intriguing mysteries and compelling characters, each with their own individual arcs. This combination creates a rich and captivating narrative, and provides a solid base for each new season to develop from.
I remember when True Detective first came out in 2014 – it was a huge hit for HBO! While it didn’t last for many seasons, it definitely showed the network that anthology series could work. I think True Detective really helped make shows like The White Lotus possible, because it proved there was an audience for that kind of storytelling.
True Detective’s Premiere Season Was Critically Acclaimed
The first season of True Detective was a huge success, earning praise for its compelling story and the strong performances of its stars, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. The show follows two detectives as they reopen a years-old case when new evidence comes to light.
The show’s first season was a huge hit, winning five Emmy Awards even against popular shows like Breaking Bad and House of Cards. Although some viewers felt the characters could have been developed more, the season was widely praised. However, the show’s quality declined noticeably when it returned for its second season.
True Detective Lost Its Spark In Season 2, And Has Yet To Get It Back
Okay, so when True Detective came back for its second season in 2015, a year after blowing everyone away with its debut, it just didn’t quite hit the same notes. They assembled another fantastic cast, no doubt, but the story felt overly complicated, and it was clear they were really bending over backwards to make it different from what we’d seen before – maybe a little too hard.
Because it’s an anthology series, each season of the show isn’t meant to ignore previous stories, but rather to expand upon them with fresh characters and settings. Sadly, the second season of True Detective didn’t feel connected to the first, and both critics and viewers were disappointed with the new direction it took.
| Season | Rotten Tomatoes Critics Score | Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score |
| Season 1 | 91% | 92% |
| Season 2 | 47% | 31% |
| Season 3 | 84% | 59% |
| Night Country | 93% | 55% |
While critics generally liked seasons 3 and 4 (called True Detective: Night Country) much more than season 2, viewers weren’t as impressed, with ratings on Rotten Tomatoes staying below 60%. The show started strong, but ultimately became a divisive anthology series, meaning people often had very different opinions about it – some loved it, while others disliked it.
True Detective Is Coming Back For More With Season 5 Due To Release In 2027
Since its highly acclaimed first season, the True Detective series has had difficulty connecting with viewers. However, the recent Night Country installment has given fans renewed hope. It was a critical success, even winning the show its sixth Emmy award and helping to secure a fifth season, scheduled for release in 2027.
While True Detective hasn’t yet reached the heights of its first season, the next installment could be a step towards regaining its former popularity. However, The White Lotus has clearly become HBO’s most successful anthology series, surpassing True Detective in terms of overall success.
