Before Peter Jackson’s hugely successful Lord of the Rings films came out in the 2000s, the story was primarily adapted as animated movies. Ralph Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings from the 1970s is still considered a classic, and fans continue to cherish Rankin and Bass’ versions of The Hobbit and The Return of the King. Considering how popular the franchise is, the 20-year gap between Rankin and Bass’ The Return of the King and Peter Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Ring felt like a long wait. However, a lesser-known animated fantasy film, Ralph Bakshi’s Fire and Ice, was released in 1983 in between those two adaptations.

Created by Conan the Barbarian, along with Marvel Comics writers Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas, Fire and Ice successfully captured the adventurous, exciting, and imaginative spirit of popular fantasy stories from that era. The film features beautifully drawn and intense fight scenes, a variety of fantastical creatures, and a truly menacing villain. Similar to Ralph Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings and Wizards, Fire and Ice used rotoscope animation – a technique where animators trace over live-action footage to create movement – giving each character a unique look and feel. This painstaking method of animation is rarely seen in modern animated films and TV series.

Fire and Ice Encompasses the Forgotten Dark Fantasy Style of the 1980s

In a fantastical realm, the wicked sorcerer Nekron and his mother, the Queen, rule over the icy fortress of Icepeak and are locked in a perpetual conflict with the people of Firekeep. As a deceptive attempt to create peace, the Queen kidnaps the daughter of Firekeep’s leader, intending for her to marry her son. However, the daughter manages to escape and unexpectedly encounters Larn, a courageous warrior whose home was ravaged by Nekron.

I came across this incredible warrior called Darkwolf, who’s got a serious grudge against Nekron. We teamed up, and now the three of us are on a mission to stop this evil sorcerer from covering the land in ice. It’s a tough fight, but we’re determined to save everyone!

The 1980s approached fantasy in a unique way, as seen in films like The Black Cauldron and Jim Henson productions like The Dark Crystal. This era of fantasy leaned towards darker, more realistic stories filled with grand battles, strange creatures, and scenes that stuck with viewers – and often gave them nightmares – for years to come. Fire and Ice fit right into this style, feeling like a mix of Conan the Barbarian and Masters of the Universe.

Compared to The Lord of the Rings, Fire and Ice is bolder with its characters and storyline. It didn’t shy away from killing off important characters in graphic scenes, and the animation featured more blood and violence during fights and deaths. The character designs and costumes were also more suggestive, similar to those seen in Conan the Barbarian and Heavy Metal. Overall, Fire and Ice has a noticeably more mature and edgy tone.

Fans of The Lord of the Rings Will Love Fire and Ice

Fire and Ice has a lot in common with The Lord of the Rings. Though the adventure isn’t as expansive, it features a rescue mission and a group of heroes uniting to form a team – similar to the fellowship in LOTR. The villain, a powerful sorcerer, is reminiscent of characters like Sauron and Saruman. Both stories explore the conflict between creation and destruction, and good versus evil.

Nekron’s soldiers feel like the brutish orcs of fantasy, and Darkwolf’s enigmatic character shares similarities with a classic hero. He willingly teams up with Lairn, driven by a shared objective but with his own unique motivations – a dynamic reminiscent of the Ranger in The Lord of the Rings. The story is also filled with imaginative creatures, like poisonous centipedes, massive lizards, and a terrifying octopus-like monster that echoes the Watcher in the Water, lurking to ambush the heroes when they least expect it.

Since Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy, adaptations like The Hobbit films, The War of the Rohirrim, and the series The Rings of Power have received very different reactions. While The Hobbit films weren’t as well-received, The War of the Rohirrim disappointed both critics and viewers. The Rings of Power has been particularly divisive, sparking a lot of debate among fans about whether it’s actually good or not.
