With James Gunn’s DC Universe growing, the upcoming series Lanterns is generating a lot of excitement. However, playing John Stewart won’t be Aaron Pierre’s first role in a superhero project. Though he’s become well-known recently, especially after appearing in Rebel Ridge, Pierre has actually been a professional actor for nearly ten years.

He’s taken on a variety of roles, but playing John Stewart in DC’s Lanterns feels like his biggest opportunity so far. With shows like Superman, Peacemaker, and Creature Commandos already successfully launching the new DC Universe, the studio needs to maintain that positive energy when Lanterns arrives in 2026.

Trailers for Clayface and Supergirl have generally been well-received, but the initial trailer for HBO’s upcoming Lanterns show caused a lot of negative feedback, leading to it being taken down. This means Pierre, who’s involved with the show, really needs to deliver something great, though he’s experienced with DC projects.

I remember when Pierre was in Krypton back in 2018 – he played Dev-Em. While it might not be as well-known as some of the other DC shows, Krypton actually got pretty good reviews, and Pierre’s character was a really important part of the storyline. I enjoyed seeing him in that role!

Dev-Em, a courageous commander in the Military Guild, consistently fought against villains like Brainiac and General Zod, even suffering a serious injury in the process. While it will be a significant change for the actor Pierre to move from playing Dev-Em to John Stewart, many actors within this franchise have played multiple roles before.

Aaron Pierre Isn’t The First DC Actor To Play Multiple Roles

Some fans might be surprised to see Pierre playing another DC character, but there’s no need to worry. He’s far from the only actor who’s played multiple characters from the same universe. It’s easy to think this happens only with lesser-known actors in small parts, but that’s actually not true.

Mark Hamill is famous for bringing the Joker to life in animated shows, especially Batman: The Animated Series. But his voice work doesn’t stop there – he also played Solomon Grundy in Justice League. Plus, he even stepped into live-action as The Trickster in The Flash, demonstrating his incredible range and ability to portray many memorable characters.

Michael Rosenbaum has a diverse acting background. While he’s famous for playing Lex Luthor on Smallville, he’s also lent his voice to other iconic roles, including the Flash in the 2001 Justice League and Johnny Charisma in Batman: Arkham Knight. Despite these characters being very different from one another, Rosenbaum successfully portrayed each one without facing criticism.

Pierre isn’t alone in this situation. Jason Momoa is also taking on a very different DC role – he’ll be playing Lobo after being known as Aquaman. People generally accept Momoa in both parts, so Pierre deserves the same understanding when he takes on Green Lantern.

Many actors, including David Dastmalchian, Sean Gunn, Phil LaMarr, Khary Payton, Teri Hatcher, Nathan Fillion, and Nicole Kidman, have played several different DC characters over the years. This is quite common, so Pierre’s casting as John Stewart is something to look forward to, not worry about.

Aaron Pierre’s Double Casting Could Make A DCU Multiverse More Interesting

The DC Universe (DCU) is off to a strong start and seems poised for long-term success. While a multiverse—where different universes exist alongside each other—could happen in the future, it makes James Gunn’s decision to cast actors in multiple roles even more intriguing. It’s also worth noting that some DC projects, like Matt Reeves’ The Batman and My Adventures with Superman, aren’t currently part of Gunn’s new universe.

It might be a while before the DC Universe explores different realities, but doing so could open the door for actor Pierre to play both John Stewart and Dev-Em in the same movie or show. Even if these characters don’t share scenes, having them both connected to Superman, as played by David Corenswet, would create a cool and interesting dynamic, making the DC Universe feel more expansive and engaging.

I was so excited to see Chris Evans show up in Deadpool & Wolverine! It reminded me of when Marvel brought his old Fantastic Four character, the Human Torch, into the main MCU timeline, even while he was already playing Captain America. It was a fun surprise! While I don’t think everyone is as familiar with Pierre’s Dev-Em, I have a feeling he could be a really cool addition to the universe later on, too – a nice little surprise for fans like me.

Now that Peacemaker is officially part of the DC Universe and John Cena is back in the role, fans are wondering how it will connect with existing characters and storylines. While James Gunn didn’t want a full reboot, the current state of the franchise is so complex that we might see older versions of heroes reappear – which could even mean a return for actor Pierre as the villain Dev-Em.

With the movie Lanterns coming out soon, Aaron Pierre is probably concentrating on his new role as John Stewart, rather than revisiting his older character from Krypton. However, the DC Universe exploring multiple universes offers exciting possibilities, and Pierre being cast in two different roles suggests we might see a connection between them in the future.
