Beetz Brothers Team With ZDF, Arte, DW on Feature-Length Documentary ‘Hurt People Hurt People – October 7 and its Aftermath’

As a seasoned movie critic with extensive travel and exposure to diverse global narratives, I am particularly intrigued by “Hurt People Hurt People.” The collaboration between Beetz Brothers and ZDF, under the direction of Jens Strohschnieder, Mathias Marx, and Duki Dror, promises an insightful exploration of the complexities in the Middle East. Their previous work, “Supernova: The Music Festival Massacre,” showcased their commitment to shedding light on significant events that often go unnoticed or misrepresented in mainstream media.

Beetz Brothers, a renowned German production team, has collaborated with ZDF to create a full-length documentary titled “Hurt People Hurt People: The Impact After October 7” which delves into the aftermath of the Hamas attack in Israel and the persistent cycle of violence in the Middle East.

The Beetz Brothers, under Leonine Studios (owned by Mediawan), are once again collaborating with Duki Dror of Zygote Films. Previously, they worked together on ‘Supernova: The Music Festival Massacre,’ a film that depicted the tragic event at a music festival in Southern Israel where 365 attendees lost their lives, hundreds were injured, and 40 were abducted into Gaza. This documentary is currently airing in more than 50 countries worldwide and has been screened at festivals across the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

The upcoming documentary, set to coincide with the first anniversary of the tragic Hamas incident and the start of the conflict in Gaza on October 7, 2023, is helmed by directors Jens Strohschnieder, Mathias Marx from Germany, and Dror from Israel. This 90-minute production blends firsthand accounts from Israel and Gaza with insights from renowned trauma specialists and Middle East experts. “Hurt People Hurt People” explores how the extensive Israeli military operation intended to dismantle Hamas in Gaza has led to a profound Palestinian psychological wound – a repetition of the displacement experienced in 1948.

Reinhardt Beetz, from Beetz Brothers, stated that ignorance often goes hand in hand with strong nationalism and overzealous patriotism. He explained how the swiftness of images, believed to be genuine, can swamp public opinion with falsified truths. The Hamas terrorist attack on October 7 was a significant event that reshaped history.

A year has passed, and we’re now starting to understand its far-reaching effects globally,” stated Beetz. “For Israelis and Palestinians, it ignited Pandora’s box, leaving a lasting impression in their shared history.” He expressed concern that the ongoing conflict portends a dismal future, characterized by a scarcity of reconciliation and compassion, fueled by fear, animosity, and survival urges.

In the heart of the Middle East, I found myself filming amidst landscapes that felt shrouded in a somber veil – particularly in Israel and the West Bank. The atmosphere was strikingly alike, heavy with an oppressive sense of despair. It was as if these two regions, though geographically distinct, were living in parallel worlds of sorrow.

In Europe, discussions about the conflict in Gaza have been intense, leading at times to violent protests that express hatred towards Jews (anti-Semitism) and Muslims (anti-Muslim).

Dror expressed that considering October 7 from a traumatic perspective helps us break free from the traditional, contentious political debate which often leads to a dead end.

Dror stated that this is our initial move towards crafting a storyline that allows all parties to ponder upon, acknowledging the devastating cycle they find themselves trapped in,” is one possible paraphrase of the given sentence.

The film ‘Hurt People Hurt People,’ produced by the Beetz brothers in partnership with Zygote Films, ZDF, Arte, and Deutsche Welle, will first air on Deutsche Welle channels globally from early October. The movie previously premiered on the French-German network Arte on September 24. Deutsche Welle owns the worldwide distribution rights for this film.
