‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,’ ‘Transformers One’ Fly Above ‘The Wild Robot’ at International Box Office

As a dedicated moviegoer who has weathered countless blockbusters, sequels, and animated adventures, I must say that this international box office roundup is as unpredictable as a rollercoaster ride. The top-grossing films of the week, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “Transformers One,” are indeed formidable contenders, but it’s the underdog, “The Wild Robot,” that has truly captured my heart.

In the global box office race, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” produced by Warner Bros. and Tim Burton, and Paramount’s animated “Transformers One” outperformed “The Wild Robot” from Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation.

In global box office earnings, “Transformers One” topped with an earnings of $16.6 million across 61 territories, marking a 44% decrease from the previous weekend. On the other hand, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” that debuted earlier in September, accumulated a robust $13.6 million from 77 markets during the week. Lastly, “The Wild Robot,” which is gradually releasing overseas and is playing on fewer screens, managed to bring in $9.86 million from 29 markets.

Over the weekend, “The Wild Robot” took flight internationally, earning a staggering $6.85 million and amassing a grand total of $18.1 million abroad. Directed by Chris Sanders, this animated sci-fi tale dominated North America with an impressive $35 million, boosting its global earnings to a whopping $53 million. The movie made its debut in Mexico, raking in $3.7 million, and maintained its strength in Australia, earning $1.5 million over the weekend and a total of $4.5 million so far. In China, however, ticket sales plummeted by 74%, generating $821,000 over the weekend and a cumulative $5 million.

Due to positive feedback from both reviews and audiences, “The Wild Robot” is likely to maintain its popularity in a similar vein as recent post-pandemic animated family films like Pixar’s “Elemental” and Illumination’s “Migration.” In this film, Lupita Nyong’o lends her voice to the ROZZUM unit 7134, an android who is isolated but forms a connection with a lost gosling.

The animated film “Transformers One,” featuring the voice talents of Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, and Scarlett Johansson, has earned $32.8 million overseas and a total of $72 million globally to date. This weekend, it debuted in China with an income of $8 million, Korea with $1.4 million, and Brazil with $660,000. In the upcoming weeks, it will be released in other significant markets such as Germany, the U.K., and France.

Worldwide, the 2019 film “Beetlejuice” has garnered a total of $373.3 million so far, with its international earnings amounting to $123.2 million. In North America, it’s been a massive box office success, raking in an impressive $250 million, pushing its global earnings to the stated figure. The countries where it has drawn the largest crowds outside of North America are the United Kingdom with $27.6 million, Mexico with $17.1 million, and France with $11.3 million.
