‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Aims to Clear $100 Million in Scary-Good Opening Weekend

As a cinephile who has witnessed the highs and lows of cinema since the dawn of the multiplex era, I must say that the return of Beetlejuice is nothing short of electrifying! With a potential opening weekend haul of $100 million to $110 million, this sequel seems poised to haunt the box office charts for quite some time.

The ghost with the most is looking to inject a little life into the sluggish box office.

The sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 film “Beetlejuice,” titled the same, is projected to have a massive opening weekend earning between $100 million and $110 million. If these ticket sales estimates hold true, the new movie could find itself in the ranks of 2017’s “It” ($123 million opening) and 2019’s “It: Chapter 2” ($91 million debut), as one of the largest September box office debuts ever recorded

Warner Bros, responsible for releasing “Beetlejuice 2,” anticipates an initial earning of about $80 million. If the movie manages to earn more than this figure, it would be a fantastic success considering its production cost of $100 million

Initially, “Beetlejuice” was a resounding success, both critically and commercially, earning $74.7 million. It even led to a Broadway musical nominated for a Tony award. The narrative revolves around an unscrupulous ghost from the Netherworld who assists a deceased couple in haunting the new residents of their old residence. In the sequel, which is set 36 years later, Lydia Deetz’s daughter, whose family was terrorized in the original storyline, stumbles upon the gateway to the Afterlife and unwittingly frees everyone’s beloved bio-exorcist spirit

This weekend, “Beetlejuice” is the sole new addition to the cinemas, meaning it’s poised to dominate the domestic box office charts regardless of whether viewers call its name thrice or not. The horror-comedy is set to dethrone Disney’s Marvel sequel “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which has held the No.1 position for five out of the last six weeks, en route to earning $603 million domestically and over $1.26 billion globally

Although blockbusters such as “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and “Despicable Me 4” graced the big screen this summer, overall domestic box office earnings decreased by 14.3% compared to 2023, as reported by Comscore. The upcoming films “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “Transformers One” (Sept. 20), “The Wild Robot” (Sept. 27), “Joker: Folie à Deux” featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga (Oct. 4), “Venom: The Last Dance” (Oct. 25) from Sony, and “Smile 2” (Oct. 18) from Paramount are expected to rejuvenate the fall season
