Tim Burton, the director of Beetlejuice, along with lead actress Jenna Ortega, have now responded to recent rumors about the potential creation of Beetlejuice 3. The 2024 theatrical release of this sequel has received favorable feedback from both critics and audiences, currently boasting a Fresh Certification of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, derived from 367 reviews.

In April, when asked if a new Beetlejuice film was being considered by Warner Bros., producer Michael De Luca hinted that work on the third movie in their horror-comedy series was about to start. Yet, it appears that neither Burton nor Ortega were made aware of these possible plans regarding the Beetlejuice franchise by the studio.

In their recent conversation with THR, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton (Ortega) have both ruled out the prospect of reprising their roles for Beetlejuice 3. Despite finding pleasure in crafting the sequel, director Tim Burton expressed his doubts about the allure of a threequel.

He mentioned that it took 35 years to produce the second one, which would make him 105 by then. He acknowledged that the chances of this happening aren’t favorable. However, he genuinely enjoyed working on this project, as Warner Bros. initially showed little interest. Similar to the first film, they relied on improvisation from the actors. It was a delight for him to work with some familiar faces and Jenna. Yet, it felt like trying to recreate the Wednesday dance scene. He cherishes the characters, but he’s not entirely convinced about its continuation.

When inquired about his emotions if the studio chooses a different director for the project, Burton openly admitted that he’d still feel let down, despite not having ownership over the Beetlejuice series.

Burton expressed, “I have a strong sense of ownership over all my work, regardless of who the characters belong to. When they created the Beetlejuice Broadway musical, it made me extremely upset.

Currently, Ortega is hesitant to resume playing Astrid unless Burton is involved, as he’s also collaborating with her on the hit Netflix show ‘Wednesday’.

She stated that she wouldn’t consider joining that project and believes anyone else should feel the same, as the project essentially exists due to Tim’s contributions. There isn’t another movie quite like Beetlejuice, so suggesting otherwise seems somewhat disrespectful towards Tim.
