As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for Tim Burton’s unique cinematic universe, I can’t help but feel a rush of nostalgia and excitement over the successful return of Beetlejuice to the big screen. I remember waiting eagerly for the original movie back in the day, huddled around our family TV set during its premiere. The thought that the sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, was initially considered for a streaming release had me a bit worried.
Initially, there were plans to stream the Beetlejuice sequel on WarnerMax, but this concept was swiftly dismissed within the company according to co-chair Pamela Abdy, as reported by The New York Times.
Abdy stated, “It wasn’t feasible for Tim, given his nature as a visionary artist who thrives on big-screen presentations.” The plan had been under consideration for ten years, with Warner Bros. and Burton examining various ideas, such as the abandoned proposal for Beetlejuice in Hawaii. (It’s noteworthy that Burton directed four episodes of Wednesday on Netflix.)
Originally, Abdy and Michael De Luca aimed for a streaming debut, but collaborated with Burton to instead make the movie a cinematic exclusive. This move was primarily due to budget limitations, as the original budget estimation soared to $147 million due to actors’ salaries and production costs. Eventually, De Luca and Abdy managed to negotiate a lower budget of $99 million with Burton, keeping the costs under the $100 million limit. In return, they secured profit-sharing arrangements for the cast and crew based on the film’s success.
The strategy of premiering Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in cinemas proved successful as it generated a staggering $264 million globally within just two weeks of its release. In the United States alone, the movie has garnered over $190 million and held the number one spot at the box office for two consecutive weekends. Box office experts predict that it will surpass the $200 million mark domestically in the near future.
After the release, De Luca expressed the atmosphere at Warner Bros. as one of joy and excitement, with wide grins on everyone’s faces. It’s hard to beat the positive impact of a success like this on team spirit.
Anticipation grows for the upcoming film, as the Beetlejuice 4K Steelbook Edition pre-orders are now live, set to release September 9th. Enthusiasts of the original movie can also secure a copy of the classic Beetlejuice in 4K Blu-ray format, while a DVD collection of the cherished Beetlejuice animated series is also on sale.
