Beck’s Dead After Season 1—But Her Spirit Haunts You Season 5!

In the fifth season of “You,” actress Elizabeth Lail reappears as her character Guinevere Beck. However, just like in this intriguing Netflix show, things may not be as they appear at first glance.

In the initial, widely acclaimed season of “You,” Beck served as Joe Goldberg’s (played by Penn Badgley) fixation. However, she wasn’t the only one. In fact, his earlier focus, Candace Stone (portrayed by Ambyr Childers), resurfaced in an attempt to seek justice, but unfortunately, her efforts proved fruitless.

In a fresh twist for season 5 of “You”, Joe’s charms are once again captivating three women: Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), Marienne Bellamy (Tati Gabrielle), and Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie, as usual). However, this time, it’s the turn of BookTok sensation, Bronte (Madeline Brewer), who finds herself ensnared in Joe’s web.

As it happens, my gaming buddy, Bronte seems connected to Beck. That’s right, Lail pops up in the climactic fifth and last chapter of the Netflix series we’ve been binge-watching together. But here’s the catch – does this imply she’s still kicking? A word of caution: spoilers lie ahead, and some might find this discussion troubling.

Is Beck alive in You Season 5?

Yes, you’re correct that Beck, the character from “You” Season 1, was tragically killed by Joe. However, due to the narrative structure of Season 5, Beck will appear again in the series via flashbacks, explained by Elizabeth Lail’s return to the show.

In the final episode of Season 1, Beck successfully deceives Joe into unlocking the cage, trapping him within. She then accuses him of his stalking and homicidal acts, declares that he’s damaged, and warns him that he’ll be confined to prison for the remainder of his life.

However, when she attempts to depart, she finds herself unable to exit the basement because the door is securely locked. Instead of aiding her, Paco, Joe’s apprentice, chooses not to assist and departs instead.

Upon Beck’s arrival, Joe discovers that she has escaped from her cage. In a violent encounter, he confronts her. The details of this altercation aren’t shown initially, but later flashbacks reveal that Joe ended Beck’s life by strangling her. Remarkably, Joe successfully evades punishment for his actions by falsely implicating Beck’s therapist and former lover, Dr. Nicky, in the crime.

It should be made clear that the first season of ‘You’, the Netflix series, adheres most closely to the storyline of Caroline Kepnes’ book series. However, unlike in the novel where Beck meets his end by strangulation, it is depicted differently and less graphically violent in the show.

How does Beck die in the You Books?

In the initial book of Kepnes’ “You” series, Joe tears out pages from The Da Vinci Code and forces them into Beck’s esophagus while he’s choking her. Earlier in the narrative, this was the very copy of The Da Vinci Code that Joe had given to Beck as a gift.

In the initial novel, you find the scenario unfolding like this: “Your strength has diminished, and this time, I release your grip from your arms to encircle your neck more genuinely.

As a gamer, I find myself squaring off against an adversary whose punches lack the power they once possessed. The darkness within them seems to overshadow any semblance of good, causing their cheeks to pale, and every blow sends a sharp pain through my chest, my heart pounding like a drum in my throbbing cock, and my hips resonating with each hit. Their eyes bulge, reflecting a repulsive intensity that leaves me feeling contemptuous. Truly, they are vile…

As a devoted admirer, I grasp your throat and express gratitude for the unexpected kick to my sensitive region. I struggle to rid myself of your spittle on my lashes. Your actions have left no room for doubt in my mind – you’ve certainly demonstrated your unsavory nature.

It seems that you don’t desire love or life, and our connection never truly materialized. You appear ordinary and rough, struggling and choking. Your solipsistic, thoughtless actions, marked by your grubby fingers, have marred my books, my emotions, even my existence…

As an ardent admirer, I find myself impulsively grasping your Da Vinci Code with my right hand. In a moment of uncontainable excitement, I thrust the book into my mouth and nibble on some pages. Swiftly, I withdraw the book and fling it aside, only to scoop up the torn, saliva-drenched fragments from my lips, which I’ve longed for so dearly.

I say to you as my final words, ‘Guinevere, open up.’ As I force the pages into your mouth, your eyes widen unnaturally and your body stiffens. The sound that follows is the agonizing cry of death. Bones seem to fracture somewhere, and your tear ducts overflow in a desperate response.

Your left eye leaks the tear of finality onto your delicate porcelain skin, while your gaze is fixed on a place I’ve never ventured, a realm untouched by any familiar experience; there, your eyes hold an unspoken tale.

Right now, you’re acting more like a lifeless doll instead of responding in a way that seems rational or human. It’s as if words you speak are merely repeating what you’ve been fed without any genuine thought or emotion, like the blood in your throat is controlling your speech.

Why Beck is in You Season 5

In the fifth season of You, Beck makes an appearance due to the new love interest or fixation of the character, Joe, who in actuality is named Louise – a former writing student of Beck.

Following Beck’s death, Louise, along with several digital detectives – among them Clayton, Dr Nick’s son – choose to conduct their own investigation, suspecting that Joe could be the actual culprit.

Louise deviates from the original strategy, burglarizing Mooney’s and insinuating herself into Joe’s existence. Despite being tricked by him, her perspective shifts dramatically when she encounters Marienne again at the bookstore.

In the final episode of You Season 5, Louise narrowly escapes being one more victim of Joe’s. Remarkably, she manages to stay alive and dial the police, ultimately leading to Joe’s much-needed arrest.

Hereafter, he’ll serve out his days in prison due to his wrongdoings, ensuring those unfairly accused can go free. Meanwhile, Beck may not have returned from the grave, but Louise is now permitted to reissue her memoir, ‘The Dark Face of Love’, sans Joe’s additions.

The ending scene depicts Louise entering the recently acquired bookstore (formerly Mooney’s), where she discovers editions of Beck’s revised novel.

She envisions Beck standing at a signing desk, sporting a radiant grin on her face. However, much like many others, she’ll never realize her dreams due to unfortunate circumstances, Louise remarks. Joe took those opportunities away from them. In their memory, we strive to make the most of our own lives.
