According to the CEO of Epic Games, these high prices aren’t expected to drop anytime soon, which could negatively impact high-end gaming.

The AI industry is destroying gaming

Rumors started circulating a few months ago, but the recent, sharp increase in RAM prices still came as a surprise to many. Prices have multiplied in under a week, and there’s no indication they’ll stabilize anytime soon. Industry experts believe this means difficult times ahead for gamers.

Tim Sweeney recently shared his thoughts on X, stating that the problems we’re seeing now will likely impact the gaming industry for years.

The cost of RAM is expected to stay high for gamers for the next few years. Manufacturers are prioritizing production for artificial intelligence applications, as data centers are willing to pay much more for advanced RAM than consumers are.

We’ll likely get a clearer picture of the potential impact soon, with reports suggesting NVIDIA and AMD may stop making affordable graphics cards and concentrate on higher-end models. Adding to this, Microsoft is predicted to increase the price of Xbox Series X/S consoles due to a shortage of memory. This will almost certainly also affect the price of the upcoming Steam Machine, which hasn’t been announced yet.

For a while, cryptocurrency mining felt like the worst possible thing for gamers. But now, the rise of artificial intelligence is proving to be even more impactful, effectively ending the days of affordable gaming.
