The BBC and ZDF have ordered a darkly humorous Cold War suspense series titled “Honey,” which is characterized as both tender and playful while also being sleek and risky, from the production company Sid Gentle Films led by Sally Woodward Gentle, who are renowned for their work on “Killing Eve.
This drama series, penned by Emma Moran (“Extraordinary”), delves into the clandestine realm of counter espionage and enticing yet perilous relationships set amidst 1980s East Berlin. The six-episode series, available on BBC iPlayer, BBC One, and ZDF, is produced in collaboration with Fifth Season, who are overseeing its worldwide distribution.
The story takes place in East Berlin during 1982 and revolves around Marta, a 24-year-old secret agent working for MI6. With adversaries lurking at every corner and the constant fear of her cover being exposed by Friedrich Bauman, the new chief of counterintelligence for the Stasi, she strives to remain undetected. However, she finds herself in a difficult predicament as she’s drawn between Friedrich and Aaron Neeland, an impulsive and self-assured (yet incredibly appealing…) CIA agent. This Cold War triangle leaves her taken aback by feelings of attraction.
Moran expressed: “I can’t wait to delve into the thrilling chaos that resembles Cold War East Berlin in our project. For me, blending romance with espionage makes for an ideal pairing.
In the realm of cinema, I found myself captivated by the gritty backdrop of East Germany portrayed in ‘Honey’. The narrative is brimming with sharp intelligence, raw violence, and a palpable sexual tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Emma’s scripts are known for their unapologetic wit, refined elegance, and swift pace, all while subtly weaving threads of desperate romance into the storyline.
Lindsay Salt, head of BBC Drama, declared: ” ‘Honey’ is a clever, witty, and captivating story about an MI6 agent entangled in a lethal and tumultuous love triangle. This fantastic new series from Emma and her team at Sid Gentle Films Ltd., takes genre norms and ingeniously flips them on their head.
Arvand Khosravi, a high-ranking executive at Fifth Season responsible for scripted television strategy, characterized “Honey” as both revolutionary and sophisticated. Additionally, he mentioned that there is already significant foreign attention towards
Moran serves as both the head scriptwriter and executive producer, while Emme Hoy (“Renegade Nell”) contributes to the writing team. The show is also overseen by Woodward Gentle and Lee Morris from Sid Gentle Films in their role as executive producers. Christopher Hall is responsible for production.
The production titled “Honey” was funded by Salt, airing on both BBC iPlayer and BBC One. Moreover, it was also backed by Frank Seyberth, the head of international co-production for fiction at ZDF.
