BBC Studios Production is undergoing significant changes in its organizational structure to take advantage of the growing interest in non-scripted content. The CEO, Zai Bennett, has announced a major restructuring plan.
Kate Ward is taking charge of a newly created Unscripted Productions department that combines the company’s Factual, U.K. Entertainment, and Development operations into one unit. Ward, who has been managing the Factual division since 2023, will now serve as Managing Director of Unscripted Productions. With her extensive background in overseeing successful shows such as “The Americas” on NBC Universal, the upcoming BBC remake of “Walking with Dinosaurs,” and Nat Geo’s “Tucci in Italy,” she aims to use this experience to lead the new department.
BBC Studios’ Unscripted Production team gathers an exceptional collection of creative works, guided by a talented team of industry leaders who excel in various aspects of the unscripted television genre,” stated Ward. The combined division includes the Natural History Unit, Science Unit, Factual Productions, Documentary Unit, and BBC U.K. Entertainment, as well as labels like Voltage TV, Mothership TV, Samphire Films, and Mettlemouse Entertainment.
Suzy Lamb (MD Entertainment U.K.) and Karl Warner (executive VP of U.K. Entertainment and Digital Development) will keep leading the charge in format and franchise development, working under Bennett and coordinating with Ward on the broader entertainment plan. Currently, Lamb’s team is responsible for creating more than 1,000 hours of content yearly, including popular international shows such as “Strictly Come Dancing,” “The One Show,” “Glastonbury,” “The Weakest Link,” and “Dragons’ Den.
At the same time, Bennett is intensifying his worldwide aspirations by establishing a separate Global Production division, with Matt Forde as its president. Forde, who has successfully led BBC Studios’ international growth through acquisitions such as STV (Nordics), Brutal (Spain) and Werner (Australia), will speed up the company’s production activities beyond the U.K., leveraging the success of formats like “The 1% Club,” “Ghosts,” and “The Honesty Box.
Bennett pointed out that there’s been a growing interest in unscripted programming within our customers’ content plans. Having just one Unscripted business provides us with a very strong product for the market, and now is the perfect time to expand our international production capabilities substantially.
Furthermore, Forde mentioned: “We’ve experienced significant expansion globally over the past three years, and expanding our market presence is crucial if we aim to capitalize on a worldwide creative network and generate more successful format series – while also producing original content tailored for local viewers worldwide.
Immediately, the organizational restructuring becomes active, being an integral component of BBC Studios’ five-year expansion plan aimed at expanding their presence in global markets.
