BBC Studios Productions COO Martha Brass Exits to Focus on Non-Executive Roles

On a Friday, BBC Studios announced that Martha Brass, their COO, is planning to leave the company this coming summer. She aims to focus more on her increasing number of non-executive director roles and personal interests.

Starting with BBC Studios in September 2021, Brass significantly contributed during a time of change as the company strengthened its content creation abilities. During her employment, she temporarily managed the production sector after the departure of former CEO Ralph Lee in March 2024, ensuring smooth operations until Zai Bennett, the new CEO and chief creative officer, assumed leadership in November.

The experienced executive played a crucial role in reorganizing BBC Studios’ strategy for 2022, combining their Production and Content Partnerships divisions into one single content entity. This restructuring led to the creation of four distinct production sectors: Scripted, Factual, Global Entertainment (previously known as Global Formats Group), and Kids & Family (later accompanied by Audio). This streamlined approach facilitates more efficient decision-making regarding creativity and investments throughout the company’s various projects.

Under her management, BBC Studios Productions broadened its reach by making strategic purchases such as Voltage TV (U.K.), STV (Nordics), Werner (Australia), and Brutal (Spain). Additionally, she made minority investments in Turbine, Mothership, Mettlemouse, and more recently Samphire Films. Furthermore, she was responsible for the commercialization of Children’s and Audio content after their transition from the BBC’s public service division.

In October 2024, Brass, a passionate golfer with extensive network in the field, became the first female head of England Golf, the national organization overseeing golf. Her roles include being a non-executive director for the PGA European Tour, chairing PGA European Tour Productions, and serving as a non-executive director for the British Golf Association. This month marks the end of her three-year tenure on the board at Screen Skills Limited.

Prior to working at BBC Studios, Brass had already established a successful international career in television. This was achieved through various executive positions at prominent companies such as Pearson Television (now known as Fremantle Limited), 19 Entertainment, Endemol Shine Group, and Newen Studios. During this time, he collaborated with production teams that brought to life global hit shows like “American Idol,” “Big Brother,” and “Masterchef.”

Or, more concisely:

With roles at major players in the television industry including Pearson Television, 19 Entertainment, Endemol Shine Group, and Newen Studios, Brass built an international career before joining BBC Studios. Notable shows he worked on include “American Idol,” “Big Brother,” and “Masterchef.

Bennett expressed his gratitude towards Martha for her leadership at BBC Studios Productions last year and the assistance she has provided him since he joined. He described her impact as one of relentless dedication, always advocating for the business at the highest level, while simultaneously ensuring everyone in the production team is equipped and empowered to produce their finest work. Wishing her success in her future endeavors,” said Bennett.

Tom Fussell, CEO of BBC Studios, remarked: “Working alongside Martha during her tenure at BBC Studios was a genuine pleasure. Her boundless energy and enthusiasm significantly contributed to the business, making her an integral part of our growth journey. We bid her farewell as she embarks on new adventures with warm feelings and gratitude.

Looking back on her departure, Brass expressed: “I couldn’t have ended my over 25-year executive career in international television at a more fitting place than BBC Studios. The company has flourished, providing exceptional content to global audiences and boosting its investment and dividend contributions to the BBC. I take great pride in being associated with this growth and working alongside remarkable colleagues who embody the values, passion, and ambition that define the worldwide acclaim of the BBC.
