As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with a penchant for international productions, I can’t help but be enthused by the arrival of “The Jetty” across the Atlantic. Having traversed the labyrinth of British television over the years, I’ve come to appreciate the unique storytelling and acting talent that our friends across the pond consistently bring to the table.
British crime drama series “The Jetty” is now set to reach American shores. Through a special arrangement made by BBC Studios, this gripping show will be accessible on two streaming services – BritBox and Hulu, starting December 13th in the U.S.
BBC Studios owns the worldwide distribution rights for “The Jetty,” a four-episode series that debuted on BBC One and was available on BBC iPlayer in July. The show is produced by Cat Jones, with Jenna Coleman (“Doctor Who,” “The Sandman”) playing Detective Ember Manning. As Ember investigates a teenage girl’s abuse case, she uncovers clues leading to an unsolved mystery from decades past – the disappearance of Amy Knightly, another teenager. Ember soon discovers that this cold case has a personal relevance to her own life.
Janet Brown, president of BBC Studios’ global content sales, commented that if you watch ‘The Jetty,’ which was the top UK drama on the BBC this year, and find it on BritBox or Hulu, it’s not unexpected. The intriguing aspect is that in today’s market and with our strong connections, we can make it accessible to both platforms. It’s all about choosing the right content for each buyer based on what we think will work best for them.
One of several BBC Studios shows is set to debut in the U.S. over the next few months. The BBC One comedy “Black Ops,” initially aired in 2023, will be available on Hulu early in 2025. Meanwhile, “Outrageous,” a collaboration with UKTV inspired by Mary Lovell’s biography “The Mitford Girls,” is scheduled to premiere on BritBox in 2025.
Additionally, you’ll find “Douglas is Cancelled,” a comedy by Steven Moffat featuring Hugh Bonneville, premiering on BritBox in the upcoming year. This show previously aired on ITV1 during the summer season.
BritBox is a U.S.-based platform operated by BBC Studios, following their sale of the remaining shares in BBC America to AMC. However, despite this change, Brown emphasized her dedication to collaborating with various U.S. partners, as demonstrated by the “The Jetty” dual exclusivity deal.
She mentioned we’re encountering unique and original deal arrangements. It’s an excellent opportunity to propose fresh and unconventional concepts… When considering the optimal approach for distribution, we are certainly evaluating whether our own platforms or external parties – or in the case of ‘The Jetty,’ both – would be more suitable. Additionally, we are emphasizing the idea of staggered release, allowing us to present content on various platforms at different times.
She stated that in this particular market, if we manage to pair up appropriately and locate an ideal partner for this production, we will collaborate with someone who is just as committed to its success. If this partnership eventually blossoms into a franchise that proves profitable, it’s a victory for everyone involved.
Last month, Brown assumed a new role overseeing content sales in all regions for BBC Studios. This change came about as part of a larger restructuring effort, which involved the creation of a new global content sales team aimed at streamlining operations worldwide. For Brown, this means she now has a wide range of opportunities to explore and manage.
BBC Studios contributes to popular television shows such as CBS’ “Ghosts” (a collaboration with Lionsgate) and ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars”. They also host the successful kids’ streaming series “Bluey”. The enduring “Doctor Who” franchise is part of their collection. And more recently, they were involved in Netflix’s hit show “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder”, which has just been renewed for a second season.
Among its brands, you’ll find Clerkenwell Films, known for producing the Netflix hit “Baby Reindeer.” Additionally, their portfolio encompasses nature documentaries such as “Planet Earth III,” produced by BBC Studios, and an upcoming project on NBC titled “The Americas.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary knack the BBC possesses for crafting content that resonates far beyond the shores of the United Kingdom. For instance, consider the timelessness of ‘Doctor Who,’ which has celebrated half a century, or the universal charm of ‘The Office,’ now reimagined as ‘The Office Australia.’ It seems as if there’s something in the creative waters of Britain that consistently produces content with the potential to captivate audiences worldwide. Case in point: ‘Good Girls Guide’ has recently claimed the No. 1 spot in a staggering 80 countries, while ‘Bluey’ has become a global sensation. Our mission, as part of the global sales team, is to identify these gems and collaborate with the perfect partner to ensure they reach the widest possible audience.
Besides other forthcoming productions, Clerkenwell has launched its 18-episode mini-series titled “Cheaters” on CBC, and is now preparing for Season 2 to air on BBC One. Additionally, BBC Studios are marketing their Clerkenwell thriller “Truelove,” which debuted on Channel 4 earlier this year, as well as the surreal comedy series “Juice” on BBC Three and the upcoming thriller “Reunion” for BBC One.
Despite a recent tightening of budgets by broadcasting networks and streaming services, Brown remains optimistic about the diverse collection of content BBC Studios is marketing globally.
She mentioned that due to tightening content budgets, buyers are becoming more selective about the content they prioritize. This situation benefits BBC Studios because our association with BBC content means we cater to a wide audience in the UK – children, older audiences, men, women, and people from various regions. This broad range allows us to pick content that appeals to diverse demographics.
In a market where buyers are becoming more selective, it’s almost not an issue, but rather an opportunity,” she continued. “This allows us to highlight the full range of our content, as we can effectively tailor and align what works best with individual needs. Our collection was designed specifically for this type of market.
