BBC Studios, Blink Industries Team Up for New Animated Martial Arts Series, ‘Children Vs Battle SuperStars’

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’m part of the team bringing a fresh, new animated series to life! In partnership with Blink Industries, we’re creating “Children Vs Battle SuperStars” (working title), a project that marks the beginning of a two-year collaboration between our studios. This exciting venture is under an exclusive first-look deal, and we’ll be unveiling early details about the show at this week’s Annecy Animation Festival to potential clients. I can hardly wait for you all to see what we have in store!

A 22-episode television show explores a martial arts competition set in a magical contemporary landscape. It centers around everyday children competing against extraordinary “Battle SuperStars.” The series was developed by Remus Buznea and Kyriaki Kyriakou, who are recognized for their contributions to “Rick and Morty” intros, “Primal,” and the acclaimed short film “Dateless.”

This 22-episode series delves into a fantastical martial arts tournament taking place in today’s world. The story revolves around ordinary kids going up against colossal “Battle SuperStars.” The show was created by Remus Buznea and Kyriaki Kyriakou, who are well-known for their work on the “Rick and Morty” intros, “Primal,” and the award-winning short film “Dateless.

Buznea and Kyriakou explained that the concept for the series originated from our frequent losses in online fighting games against kids, which led to a lot of frustration. We decided to use a tournament structure as a way to delve into the competitive nature and satirically dismantle the stereotypes found in martial arts films.”

“Buznea and Kyriakou shared that the idea for the series was born out of our frequent defeats at the hands of children in online fighting games, causing a great deal of stress. We wanted to examine competition and mockingly deconstruct the clichés in martial arts films by structuring the story around a tournament.

Grainne McNamara, Vice President of development for live action and animation at BBC Studios Kids & Family, characterized the show as “humorous and unusual, blending the mundane with the extraordinary.” She also mentioned that it features some truly outstanding characters, including the main group of friends taking on the Super Stars, as well as a mysterious combatant that no competition would be whole without.

Blink Industries, recognized with Emmys, Annies, and BAFTAs, is set to create this upcoming series. The head of animation and executive producer at Blink, Benjamin Lole, lauded the inventive minds working on the project.

Lole commented, “The distinctive blend of humor and visual flair from Remus and Kiki sets their take on tournament-themed productions apart. We’re eager to contribute our own work, aiming to create content that rivals anime classics like ‘Naruto,’ ‘Dragon Ball,’ and ‘Pokémon.’
