Baz Luhrmann Sets New ‘Jehanne d’Arc’ Film at Warner Bros

As a fervent admirer of Baz Luhrmann’s eclectic and visionary filmography, I am absolutely thrilled to see him taking on the monumental task of bringing Joan of Arc’s epic tale to the silver screen. His knack for transforming historical narratives into vibrant, immersive cinematic experiences, as demonstrated in his works such as “Romeo + Juliet,” “Moulin Rouge!”, and “The Great Gatsby,” makes him an ideal choice for this project.

Baz Luhrmann has set his new project, “Jehanne d’Arc” at Warner Bros.

It has been confirmed that the filmmaker will soon tackle the grand saga of France’s national icon and saint, Joan of Arc. At a mere teenager, Joan of Arc earned her heroine status by leading the French troops to victory in Orléans during 1429. Tragically, she was put to death by burning at the stake in 1431.

In the early part of this year, Luhrmann withdrew from the highly anticipated English adaptation of the Russian novel “The Master and Margarita,” choosing to completely distance himself from the project after facing issues regarding the ownership of the book’s rights.

A casting call for the Joan of Arc character will go out Tuesday.

In 1992, Baz Luhrmann made his directorial debut with the film “Strictly Ballroom,” a project that started as a short play at the Wharf Theatre in Sydney. The movie’s popularity paved the way for his subsequent successful films like “Romeo + Juliet” (1996), “Moulin Rouge!” (2001), “Australia” (2008), “The Great Gatsby” (2013) and more recently, “Elvis.

Lukehrmann has not only thrived in his film career, but he’s also made a name for himself in the world of opera (staging Puccini’s “La Bohème” on Broadway in 2002), as well as producing short films and commercials such as “N° 5 the Film” for Chanel N° 5 in 2004, starring Nicole Kidman and Rodrigo Santoro, and “The Secret Life of Flowers,” a collaboration between Erdem and H&M.

He served as the executive producer, scriptwriter, and director for “The Get Down” on Netflix (a co-creation with playwright Stephen Adly Gurgis), and has a significant background in music production. His portfolio spans from the spoken-word song “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” released in 1997, to the hit soundtrack for “The Great Gatsby.

The tale of Joan of Arc has been retold numerous times in movies and TV shows, such as Luc Besson’s “The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc,” featuring Milla Jovovich in the lead role.

The story was first reported by Deadline.
