Bayonetta Creator Wouldn’t Let Anyone Get Rid Of Her Signature Glasses

Bayonetta, created by Platinum Games, first arrived in North America in 2010 and immediately won over players. It’s easy to see why – she’s a powerful witch who can transform and is a skilled gunfighter. A signature part of her look, including her glasses, was specifically requested by the game’s creator, Hideki Kamiya.

A fan recently asked Hideki Kamiya on X about a funny quote supposedly from him – “Bayonetta’s glasses are just like her underwear.” Kamiya clarified, through Automaton, that the quote actually came from Yuji Shimomura, the animation director for the game’s cutscenes. Kamiya added that he himself thinks Bayonetta always looks best with her glasses on.

During the development of Bayonetta, we received requests to remove her glasses, which I consistently refused,” said Kamiya. “However, the cinematic producer, Mr. Shimomura, firmly insisted on keeping them, famously stating that Bayonetta’s glasses were as essential as her underwear – they were absolutely not to be removed under any circumstances.

Mari Shimazaki, who designed the characters for Bayonetta, shared on X that Hideki Kamiya originally conceived the idea of Bayonetta wearing glasses during the character’s initial development.

When I was initially sketching Bayonetta’s character design for the first game, Hideki Kamiya suddenly suggested I give her glasses. He kept repeating the idea whenever I was working on rough drafts – it became his signature request! I started including a glasses layer in every design, just in case. Even though finalizing the designs could be challenging, I always kept that glasses layer ready to go.

Throughout the Bayonetta games, only one person has ever seen her without her signature glasses. She consistently wears them, even in the 2023 prequel, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon.

Bayonetta 3 was released in 2022, and after that, the game’s director, Kamiya, suggested a fourth installment was possible. However, Kamiya left Platinum Games in 2023 and has since said he wants to focus on creating his own independent games. As a result, the future of Bayonetta 4 is uncertain, as Kamiya is currently working on Okami 2.
