Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya says he’s a better YouTuber than Smash Bros director Sakurai

In a video published in May 2025, renowned video game director Hideki Kamiya confidently asserted his belief that he is a superior YouTube content creator compared to his gaming industry peer and friend, Masahiro Sakurai.

Hideki Kamiya is renowned for creating iconic video games such as Bayonetta, Viewtiful Joe, and Okami, and also contributes his skills to franchises like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry.

I’m well-known for my bold attitude on social platforms, where I don’t hesitate to block and fiercely critique those who challenge me online, or communicate with me in English instead of Japanese.

You may know Kamiya as someone who frequently posts on social media, just like many of us. But what might surprise you is that he also runs a YouTube channel!

On Kamiya’s YouTube channel, you can find videos published approximately every two weeks. In these videos, Kamiya interacts with his fans by answering their questions and sharing stories from his career in the gaming industry. He confidently asserts that his videos are more captivating than those produced by his peers.

Hideki Kamiya roasts Sakurai’s YouTube channel

During an interview with MinnMax on May 27th, he highlighted Masahiro Sakurai, a well-respected industry veteran famous for creating the Super Smash Bros series. As per Kamiya, Sakurai’s educational YouTube videos don’t hold a candle to his own material.

As someone who spends a lot of time gaming and creating content for YouTube, when someone suggested I was getting frustrated about Sakurai making YouTube look effortless, I retorted with a witty comeback: “Well, that might be the case, but I believe my YouTube channel offers a much more captivating experience compared to his.

Kamiya maintains close friendships not only with Sakurai but also with several influential figures in Japan’s gaming sector, including Katsuhiro Harada, the creator of Tekken, and Yoshi-P from Square Enix.

He frequently shares pictures of him and his friends enjoying meals and drinks at their favorite spots, which he believes appeals to his followers quite a lot.

Sakurai recently enjoyed drinks with Harada, Kamiya, and Mafia Kajita in Tokyo. In fact, they’ve been spending quite a bit of time together – they dined together back in April and July.

Given that Sakurai is currently working on a game, it seems to me that his team might still be based at Namco.

“I think people enjoy seeing what we do in our private lives,” he admitted.

In 2024, Masahiro Sakurai’s YouTube channel, titled “Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games,” published its last video. During this video, Sakurai confessed that the production of these videos cost him more than half a million dollars ($600K), and regrettably mentioned that the channel didn’t generate any income whatsoever. In contrast, Kamiya continues to be active on YouTube with over 25,000 subscribers under his belt.

Here’s an exuberant take on the situation, written from the perspective of a fan:

“I just couldn’t contain my excitement when Kamiya himself confirmed the rumors swirling around about Bayonetta potentially joining the roster for Tekken 8! Can you imagine the electrifying clashes that could unfold between these iconic characters? It’s going to be pure magic!
