Everyone knows Battlefield 2042 didn’t launch well. When Rebecka Coutaz joined DICE in 2021, she made it a priority to ensure the next Battlefield game, currently known as Battlefield 6, would be truly exceptional – one of the best in the series’ history.
She explained to GamesRadar that she felt strongly responsible for creating a higher-quality game, believing she owed it to both the player community and the development teams. This sense of commitment, she said, is what motivates her and drives her work.
Battlefield 2042 had a rocky start, plagued by technical problems and disliked changes like larger 124-player matches and the new Specialist characters. However, EA consistently worked to fix and improve the game, and according to Coutaz, it’s now vastly different from its initial release. Despite the initial struggles, the game still maintains a dedicated player base.
Electronic Arts is encouraging players to return to Battlefield 2042 with a new in-game event called ‘Road to Battlefield 6.’ By participating, players can earn exclusive content that will be available in the upcoming Battlefield 6.
“Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t”
Shashank Uchil, a design director on Battlefield 2042, explained that the team was confident some of their ambitious new features would succeed, but unfortunately, they didn’t work as planned.
We experiment with different ideas, and not everything succeeds,” Uchil said. “We hoped increasing the number of players would be popular, but it didn’t really take off. It’s similar to a band trying a new style of music – we might like it, but ultimately we have to listen to what players want and give them what they enjoy.
“We are not there yet”
Even before its release, Battlefield 6 is getting a much better reaction than Battlefield 2042 did. While early feedback from beta testing has been encouraging, the developers are cautious and aren’t declaring the game a guaranteed hit just yet.
We Swedes have a saying: ‘Don’t celebrate before you’ve actually achieved something.’ And right now, we haven’t reached that point yet. We’re enjoying this moment, but we’re staying realistic and focused. We’re not getting ahead of ourselves and we’re continuing to work hard.
Battlefield 6 will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S starting October 10th. You can find more details, including how to pre-order, in TopMob’s guide.
