Batman’s Lamest Villain Gets a Makeover From DC & Faces Harley Quinn

Batman is famous for having a fantastic collection of villains. While he’s known for iconic enemies like The Joker and Two-Face, many of his villains are simply weak and easily forgotten. Recently, one of these less memorable villains was reimagined in the Harley Quinn comic, but this new version might actually be worse than the original.

In Harley Quinn #60, written by Elliott Kalan and illustrated by Carlos Olivares, Harley reinvents herself with a new name and attitude. Following the events of DC K.O., she decides to become a more dedicated hero. This leads to the creation of Bat-Quinn – a serious, intense vigilante who fights crime using methods very similar to those of Batman, particularly as depicted in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight.

Bat-Quinn unexpectedly interrupts a bank robbery, quite literally tripping over her cape in the process. The robber turns out to be a teenager named Penny Plunderer, who explains she’s an anti-capitalist trying to dismantle the system she believes drove her father to his death. Ironically, she uses special guns that shoot pennies as ammunition.

It’s surprising that Harley Quinn knows who Penny’s father is, considering he’s one of the least threatening villains Batman has ever faced. In fact, the original Penny Plunderer is pretty unknown, and his whole idea wasn’t very good – which is notable when you consider other odd villains like Kite-Man and Crazy Quilt.

Batman’s villain The Penny Plunderer explained

The first Penny Plunderer debuted in 1947’s World’s Finest Comics #30. He was a down-on-his-luck criminal named Joe Coyne who turned to crime after struggling as a newspaper delivery boy – he resented earning just pennies for selling five-cent papers. He lost his job for gambling (fittingly, with pennies!) and was eventually jailed for armed robbery. The irony? The cash register he tried to steal was already empty except for pennies.

Discovering that pennies had caused his downfall led Joe Coyne to create one of the most ridiculous supervillain personas ever. He became the Penny Plunderer and started committing crimes involving pennies, such as hitting Batman with a roll of coins like a blackjack and scattering them to trip Robin.

The Penny Plunderer only appeared once in comics, and his disappearance wasn’t due to being defeated. Harley Quinn mentioned during a fight with his daughter that Joe Coyne, the Penny Plunderer, was actually executed for his crimes – likely including a murder that wasn’t shown in the comics. While he committed attempted murder and stole things while appearing on the page, those weren’t the crimes that led to his death.

Adding to the frustration, the one lasting contribution of the Penny Plunderer to Batman’s history was later changed. Initially, Batman defeated the Plunderer’s gang by cleverly using a giant penny, which then became a famous display in the Batcave. But later stories revised this, stating the penny was actually a large, two-headed coin previously used by the villain Two-Face.

Harley Quinn #60 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
