Bari Weiss Has a New Vision for 60 Minutes

Following recent staff reductions at CBS News, Bari Weiss, the editor-in-chief, has appointed Nick Bilton as the new executive producer of the long-running news program 60 Minutes. Bilton previously worked as a tech columnist for the New York Times, a writer at Vanity Fair, and a documentary filmmaker. He doesn’t have a background in traditional broadcast news, a similarity to Weiss’s own appointment to lead CBS News last year.

Nancy Weiss has a history of interfering with 60 Minutes, most recently with an episode about a Salvadoran prison. However, her latest changes are proving more complicated. She brought in Bill Bilton to lead the show, which meant removing the two most experienced executive producers, Tanya Simon and Draggan Mihailovich. Correspondents Cecilia Vega and Sharyn Alfonsi have also left the program. Alfonsi, who originally reported the story about the prison, recently voiced her concerns about Weiss’s management after her contract wasn’t renewed.

Despite the show’s continued success – it’s been the top news program in the US for 52 seasons – a change in leadership is occurring. Ratings for 60 Minutes are actually up 9% from last year, which is unusual for a news program in today’s streaming environment, as noted by Simon in a farewell message to staff, according to Variety. Weiss and Bilton likely think they can build on this success, and hopefully, they’ll take lessons from Simon’s previous experience with Tony Dokoupil.
