As I reflect on the passing of my beloved co-star and friend, Kris Kristofferson, I can’t help but reminisce about the incredible journey we shared together. Our time making “A Star Is Born” was more than just a movie for us – it was an experience that forever changed both our lives.
On Sunday evening, Barbra Streisand honored her “A Star Is Born” collaborator, Kris Kristofferson, after hearing about his passing at the age of 88.
On Instagram, Streisand shared a post showcasing the cover of their “A Star Is Born” album, looking back on their time together. “The first moment I saw Kris perform at the Troubadour club in L.A., I could tell he was extraordinary,” she penned. “With bare feet and strumming his guitar, he seemed like the ideal candidate for a screenplay I was working on, which eventually evolved into ‘A Star Is Born.’ In the film, Kris and I sang the song I composed for the movie’s central love theme, ‘Evergreen.’
1976 saw the release of “A Star Is Born,” a remake featuring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, which was a massive hit at the box office, raking in $80 million in North America on a production budget of just $6 million. This film, being the third remake of the 1937 original starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, tells the story of an aspiring singer (Streisand) who finds herself romantically entangled with a famous rock musician (Kristofferson). The song “Evergreen” from the film won an Oscar for best original song.
The second image in the post displays a picture of Streisand and Kristofferson taken during her 2019 concert at London’s Hyde Park, where Kristofferson made a special appearance. Streisand recalled, “I invited Kris to perform with me on stage to sing our other ‘A Star Is Born’ duet, ‘Lost Inside of You.’ He was as endearing as ever, and the crowd gave him a standing ovation. It was heartwarming to witness him receive the admiration and affection he truly deserved.
As the tribute concluded, I took a moment to express my thoughts to Lisa, Kristofferson’s devoted wife, who has always been there to stand by his side in every way imaginable.
