A “Barbershop” TV series has been greenlit at Amazon Prime Video, EbMaster has learned.
The upcoming show will be set within the universe of the “Barbershop” movie series, with Jermaine Fowler set to lead the cast. Marshall Todd, who collaborated on the initial film, is penning the series and serving as an executive producer. This news was revealed during Amazon’s presentation to advertisers in New York on Monday evening.
The show focuses on Travis ‘Trav’ Porter (Fowler), who aims to carry on his grandfather’s legacy as a renowned barber at the iconic ‘Calvin’s’ barbershop in Chicago. Although the barbers may be fresh, the shop remains bustling, the customers still debating, and the haircuts still the coolest in town – all because at Calvin’s, it’s not just about a trim, but about the community coming together.
Max Searle, together with Todd, takes on the roles of executive producer and co-showrunner in this upcoming series. Hartbeat Productions, led by Kevin Hart, Bryan Smiley, and Mike Stein, will also serve as executive producers. Cameron Burnett and Autumn Bailey-Ford represent Prominent Productions as executive producers, while State Street Pictures adds to the list. Tiffany Brown will co-executive produce for Hartbeat. This series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, and we’re excited to share that it’s a fresh take on the popular ‘Barbershop’ universe, designed for our global Prime Video audience. According to Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, “We couldn’t be more thrilled about this new series, which brings the legendary ‘Barbershop’ world to life in an innovative and funny way on Prime Video. With co-showrunners Max Searle and Marshall Todd at the helm, we’re confident that they will do a fantastic job bringing Calvin’s Chicago barbershop to a new audience on our platform.
Currently, we’re on the second television adaptation of the “Barbershop” franchise. Previously, a sitcom adapting from the movies aired on Showtime with Omar Gooding in the lead role, but it only ran for one season. The first “Barbershop” movie came out in 2002, followed by sequels in 2004 and 2016. Additionally, there was a spinoff film titled “Beauty Shop,” starring Queen Latifah, which debuted in 2005. To date, the three main films have amassed close to $200 million globally.
A talented stand-up comedian, Fowler gained recognition on screen with his leading role in the CBS multi-camera sitcom “Superior Donuts.” His TV appearances also include roles in the FX limited series “A Murder at the End of the World” and the truTV sketch comedy show “Friends of the People.” Upcoming projects for Fowler include the Tracy Morgan series “Crutch,” streaming on Paramount+, as well as Season 5 of “Only Murders in the Building.” In film, he has acted in movies like “Coming 2 America,” “Sorry to Bother You,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” and “Ricky Stanicky.
He is repped by UTA, Entertainment 360, and Yorn Levine.
Back in 2023, it was initially announced that a “Barbershop” series was being developed by Amazon, following their acquisition of MGM. Meanwhile, projects based on “Robocop” and “Poltergeist” are being planned, and a prequel to “Legally Blonde” is already in progress.
