‘Ballerina’ Trailer: Ana de Armas Meets John Wick, Slices Necks and Douses a Flamethrower in Badass Spinoff

As a movie critic who has seen more action movies than I care to remember, I must say that the trailer for “Ballerina” has me intrigued and eagerly anticipating its release next year. The combination of Ana de Armas‘ captivating performance, the high-octane action sequences, and the tantalizing hints of a John Wick cameo has me on the edge of my seat.

In the debut trailer for “Ballerina,” Ana de Armas takes center stage, seeking retribution, with the film slated for release on June 6, 2025 – a follow-up to the popular “John Wick” series.

In the gripping action-thriller, Ana de Armas portrays Rooney – a Russian ballet dancer on a quest for vengeance against a band of assassins who slaughtered her loved ones. This film, titled “Ballerina,” unfolds amidst the events between “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” and “John Wick: Chapter 4.” It focuses on the female assassin character, who made a brief appearance in the third John Wick movie, and was originally played by Unity Phelan.

The trailer reveals Rooney, played by de Armas, embarking on her personal mission for revenge. She delivers numerous beatdowns, slashes someone’s throat with an ice skate, extinguishes a flamethrower using a high-pressure hose, and in the end, encounters John Wick, who is none other than Baba Yaga.

In “Ballerina,” franchise headliner Keanu Reeves portrays John Wick. As revealed by writer Shay Hatten to Collider, Reeves takes on a significant part in the movie, with Wick being more than just a brief appearance; he’s a fully-fledged character. Other familiar faces from the “Wick” series, such as Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, and the late Lance Reddick, are reprising their roles. Additionally, Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Norman Reedus have joined the cast.

Following the success of the fourth “John Wick” film which earned over $440 million globally, “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” is set to arrive. This series has previously branched out with spinoffs, such as Peacock’s prequel miniseries “The Continental,” starring Mel Gibson, premiering in September 2023.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m eagerly anticipating the release of “Ballerina,” directed by Len Wiseman. This captivating film is penned by Hatten and is based on characters conceived by Derek Kolstad. Kaley Smalley Romo serves as executive producer for this project, joining forces with producers Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Chad Stahelski – the mastermind behind all four “John Wick” films.
