Balatro Creator Stipulates In Will That Game Can't Be Used For Gambling

As an experienced gamer with decades of virtual adventures under my belt, I can wholeheartedly appreciate the dedication and integrity of creators like LocalThunk. The thought that a game, particularly one as captivating as Balatro, could be tainted by the allure of gambling is a chilling prospect. It’s refreshing to see such fervent measures taken to ensure the purity of the gaming experience.

The maker of Balatro, LocalThunk, stated that steps have been taken to ensure the game doesn’t transform into a form of actual gambling, even if something should happen to them.

On Twitter, they expressed: “Though it might seem illogical from an outside perspective, I strongly oppose the transformation of Balatro into a legitimate gambling game. So much so, that when drafting my will, I explicitly forbade the sale or licensing of the Balatro intellectual property to any gaming company or casino.”

To put it simply, I’m strongly against the idea of Balatro transforming into a legitimate gambling platform. So much so, that in my recent will, I’ve made it a condition that the intellectual property rights of Balatro should never be transferred or licensed to any gaming company or casino.

As a longtime gamer and parent, I can understand the concerns raised about Balatro being pulled from European storefronts due to unfounded allegations of promoting gambling. However, having played the game myself, I find it hard to believe that this is the case. The game’s success, with over one million copies sold in its first month alone, speaks volumes about its appeal and quality. As a responsible parent, I think it’s important to keep an open dialogue with our children about what they are playing, but I also believe that Balatro should be given credit for its merits as an engaging and enjoyable game.

It appears that LocalThunk is hinting at an upcoming unveil for Balatro, which may occur tomorrow. The teaser only displays three hidden cards, making it tricky to guess the content of the announcement – it might be a mobile version release or possibly additional Joker cards introduced as downloadable content.

In the TopMob Balatro review, we expressed that the unique blend of poker and roguelike mechanics generates a captivating mix which is tough to tear oneself away from.
