David Jonsson, who’s rapidly making a name for himself as one of the sought-after actors within the entertainment industry, has established his very own production company.
The actor who gained attention in the 2023 indie hit “Rye Lane” and made his Hollywood debut in “Alien: Romulus” last year, as well as winning the BAFTA Rising Star award in February, has recently teamed up with BIFA-nominated producer Sophia Gibber to establish a film and TV production company called greyarea.
The pair have recently teamed up for Jonsson’s starring role and executive production, along with Gibber’s lead production role, in Cal McMau’s upcoming first film “Wasteman” that they are working on together.
Jonsson stated that we discovered Greyarea since the tales we cherish aren’t limited to black-and-white. Instead, they exist within contradictions, complexities, and the profound emotional truths in between – it is here where the most captivating storytelling occurs.
Over the past few years, and particularly during our collaboration on ‘Wasteman’, we discovered a strong harmony not just in our preferences and aspirations, but in our values,” stated Gibber. “The manner in which we breathe life into stories is as significant as the stories themselves. At greyarea., we’re dedicated to promoting storytellers who can twist, astonish, and shed light on the familiar in unanticipated ways – whether they are new voices or filmmakers we’ve long admired.
The company is set to debut, boasting substantial support from Tricky Knot, a well-known entity specializing in entertainment financing and development. This influential partner is recognized for fostering upcoming actor-led production companies. With this alliance, greyarea. will enjoy exclusive access to a dedicated funding source and financial backing for films, bolstering its expanding collection of projects.
Alex Tynion, CEO of Tricky Knot, stated that David and Sophia have the courage to follow their gut feelings, take chances, and defy traditional norms. We’re incredibly proud to support two individuals who are remarkably ambitious and dedicated to establishing an autonomous studio with a unique perspective,” said Alex Tynion.
As a cinephile, I had the privilege of being part of the negotiations that sealed the partnership between Nick Mahara (Sheridan’s) and Dewi Hall Evans, on one side, and Anita Surenden and Andre Des Rochers (Granderson Des Rochers), on the other, for the enigmatic greyarea. This collaboration promises to bring intrigue and excitement to the silver screen.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the debut of projects from the creative mind of Jonsson, who has several films in various stages of production as both writer and creator. His impressive resume includes executive producing the critically-acclaimed short film “If You’re Happy,” starring Erin Doherty, produced by Gibber. The feature-length adaptation of this short is currently being developed with Film4, offering even more reasons to be excited about Jonsson’s upcoming work. Unfortunately, details about his initial slate of films are yet to be revealed, but rest assured that they will undoubtedly be worth the wait!
Beyond establishing his own production company, Jonsson keeps an active presence on-screen. In addition to “Wasteman,” upcoming projects include Stephen King’s “The Long Walk” with Cooper Hoffman for Lionsgate and Colman Domingo’s directorial debut “Scandalous” opposite Sydney Sweeney where he portrays Sammy Davis Jr. He is also set to star in Frank Ocean’s yet-to-be-titled movie.
Gibber is a recognized producer, having garnered BIFA nominations. In collaboration with the San Francisco Chronicle, Ugly Duckling Films, Sony Music US, she co-created the popular podcast series “The Doodler.” She also produced Matt Chambers’ debut feature “The Bike Thief,” as well as the documentary “McKellen: Playing the Part” about Sir Ian McKellen. Her portfolio includes several short films that have been showcased at various international festivals, including Sundance and London.
United Agents and CAA are the entities that represent the grey area, while Granderson des Rochers and Sheridans serve as their legal representatives.
