Bad Bunny isn’t letting any backlash stop him from performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. During his Saturday Night Live monologue, he talked about the debate sparked by him being named the MVP of next year’s Super Bowl. (Apparently, most people expect a football player to be MVP? Not very exciting, but okay.) “I’m really excited to be doing the Super Bowl, and I know people around the world who enjoy my music are happy too,” Benito said in English, before switching to Spanish. In Spanish, he explained, “Especially all of the Latinos and Latinas in the world here in the United States who have worked to create opportunities. This is more than a personal victory; it’s a win for all of us. Our impact and contributions to this country can never be taken away or forgotten.” He finished by saying, in English, “If you didn’t understand what I just said, you have four months to learn.”
The Trump administration has expressed strong disapproval of Bad Bunny’s performance at the Super Bowl. When questioned about whether the NFL intended to make a statement by selecting Bad Bunny, DHS Secretary/South Park character Kristi Noem responded with a lengthy statement, saying “They suck and we’ll win and God will bless us, and we’ll stand and be proud of ourselves at the end of the day, and they won’t be able to sleep at night because they don’t know what they believe and they’re so weak. We’ll fix it.” Corey Lewandowski also announced that ICE would be present at the Super Bowl. It seems they’ve forgotten that Puerto Rico is part of the U.S. – which explains why Juan Jamón (Jon Hamm’s alter ego) can transition so seamlessly from Bad Bunny’s concert residency to making a cameo on SNL .
