Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin Boost Kamala Harris After Trump Rally Speaker Bashes Puerto Rico as a ‘Floating Island of Garbage’

As a Latino with roots deeply entrenched in Puerto Rico and a lifelong admirer of the arts, I found the recent events surrounding the Trump rally at Madison Square Garden to be nothing short of disheartening. The offensive remarks made by Tony Hinchcliffe, a comedian who seems to have missed the mark on humor, were not only racist but also deeply hurtful to millions of Puerto Ricans like myself and our allies in the entertainment industry.

On Sunday, prominent figures like Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, and others expressed their support for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. This was in response to a speaker at Donald Trump’s rally at New York’s Madison Square Garden referring to Puerto Rico as an “island of floating garbage.

A blatantly racist remark sparked strong anger among well-known Puerto Ricans, as well as numerous figures in media and entertainment.

Currently, there’s an island made entirely of trash drifting in the ocean. This floating mass is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, not Puerto Rico, as humorist and podcast host Tony Hinchcliffe pointed out before Trump’s performance at a well-known concert venue on Sunday night.

At a Trump rally, Hinchcliffe’s comments were shockingly inappropriate, with the crowd’s subdued reaction serving as evidence. Upon hearing boos and minimal support, Hinchcliffe quickly retorted “Alright, alright” defensively. It was also revealed that Hinchcliffe made highly offensive remarks about Latinos earlier in his speech.

In response, the globally acclaimed music sensation Bad Bunny – who boasts over 45 million followers on Instagram – amplified Harris’ campaign video aimed at voters in Puerto Rico. This video highlighted the strained relationship between Trump and the island during his presidency. Similarly, Jennifer Lopez shared Harris’ campaign content tailored for Puerto Rico, as well as the same video that Bad Bunny had promoted.

Ricky Martin, a popular singer-actor with over 18 million followers on Instagram, echoed similar sentiments on his Stories feed, commenting “I remember” under a video by Harris. Additionally, he shared a snippet of Hinchcliffe’s remark about the situation labeled as “garbage.” Furthermore, Martin claimed that his tweets sharing similar content have been suppressed on the platform now controlled by Elon Musk, who is known for supporting Donald Trump.

The occasion featuring Trump received extensive live broadcasting not just on Fox News but also other news networks, along with social media and digital platforms. What stood out was the presence of Melania Trump, the former first lady, who introduced Trump prior to his speech. Notably, Melania has maintained a minimal public appearance during her husband’s third presidential campaign trail.

The gathering concluded with Donald and Melania Trump appearing on stage while a singer performed an extravagant rendition of the popular tune “New York, New York.
