‘Bad Boys for Life’ Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to Make Movie About Tragic True Story of Black Student’s Death in Fraternity Hazing

The movie-makers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are planning to direct a film based on the sad true events surrounding Sanda Dia, a black student who met her untimely death in 2018 as a result of a brutal fraternity initiation rite at an esteemed Belgian university.

The movie is being produced by Kokomo, a film studio based in Brussels, which was established by Nabil Ben Yadir and Marc Goyens.

The script, authored by El Arbi and Fallah, was influenced by the books written by Ousmane (Papis) Dia’s son, Dia, titled “They Killed My Son” and another one by journalist Pieter Huyberechts called “The Baptism That Led to Death.”

El Arbi and Fallah wrote their script based on the books written by Ousmane (Papis) Dia’s son, Dia, entitled “They Killed My Son” and another one by journalist Pieter Huyberechts named “The Baptism That Led to Death.

At the age of twenty, Dia tragically passed away following a hazing incident at Catholic University of Leuven. During this event, he was compelled by fraternity members from an exclusive group, predominantly white, to consume a live goldfish and large quantities of fish oil and alcohol as part of a brutal initiation rite. Two days later, Dia succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

News of Dia’s death caused outrage in Belgium, with demands for justice as the 18 fraternity members implicated in hazing received sentences ranging from 200 to 300 hours of community service instead of prison time, and were also fined approximately $430 each.

Just like everyone else, El Arbi and Fallah expressed disbelief over the events surrounding Sanda during those two days on their project. Upon contacting his father, Papis Dia, they were moved by his courage and determination to seek justice. This film is essentially a heartfelt tribute from him to Sanda. They see similarities between themselves and Sanda, and in Papis, they see their own parents,” said the directors.

The unnamed initiative signifies a significant achievement for Komoko, a firm established with the goal of backing daring and imaginative filmmakers. As expressed by the company itself, this project represents such an endeavor. Lately, they have been responsible for the production of “Burnt Heads” directed by Maja-Ajmia Yde Zellama, which made its debut at the Berlinale Generation section just a few days ago.

The upcoming projects of the company feature the first film appearance of renowned dancer and choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, which as yet remains nameless. The producers are networking with possible collaborators for this project during the Berlin International Film Festival.

Directors El Arbi and Fallah have recently unveiled “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” and “Gangstas,” a story about the journey to stardom for Jamal ‘Juice Sinclair.’

El Arbi and Fallah’s latest projects are the movies “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” and “Gangstas.” They tell the tale of Jamal ‘Juice Sinclair’s rise to fame as he grows up.
