Though the latest trailer for Good American Family has garnered positive reviews, the Hulu series has stirred controversy among those familiar with the real-life story of Natalia Grace. Some critics are labeling it as “questionable” or “problematic.
For those unfamiliar, “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace” is a true-crime documentary series released in 2023, focusing on Natalia Grace, the Ukrainian orphan who was adopted by Michael and Kristine Barnett in 2010.
In the following years, the Barnetts arranged for Natalia’s age to be altered from 8 to 22, subsequently placing her in a secluded apartment independently. However, subsequent DNA testing has confirmed that at the time of adoption, Natalia was actually a minor.
Natalia claims that the Barnetts have subjected her to both emotional and physical mistreatment; however, the court has yet to hear this case. The situation, which is being portrayed in Good American Family, sparks questions about how the show will present these allegations truthfully without distorting the facts.

I can’t contain my enthusiasm after catching a glimpse of the trailer that dropped on February 19th! It’s already racked up over 1.7 million views, and counting! The anticipation for this new TV show is palpable, especially with Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass joining the cast as Kristine and Michael Barnett. I can hardly wait to see what unfolds on our screens!
Yet, individuals deeply involved in the case find issue with its representation. Some clips paint Natalia as an antagonist, eliciting parallels to the horror film “Orphan”, whereas others remain oblivious that Good American Family is a retelling of real events.
1. “One person was surprised to find that the orphan character turned out to be an adult; it’s quite unique.”
2. “Another commented on how the story is essentially a TV series adaptation of the Orphan novel.”
3. “A third individual suggested that they took the idea directly from the Orphan book for their story.”

In the comments area, someone who’s familiar with the matter expressed disappointment: “It’s unfortunate that some people are linking real events to a work of fiction, ‘The Orphan’, instead of acknowledging the tragic truth.
They wrongly accused her of being the culprit, when in truth, she was the one who had suffered heinous abuse at the hands of her adoptive parents.
A different individual expressed, “I find distressing the manner in which they’re depicting the adoption of a child with disabilities… It’s particularly disturbing given our newfound knowledge of her past abuse and exploitation.
“Why did they make her face like that, almost like mocking her… the adoptive mom was a psycho.”
This appears to be a clear example of sensationalized, unethical true crime content. Despite my reservations, I’ll tune in to fact-check or challenge their claims.
The Barnetts come off as unpleasant individuals, and it appears from this sneak peek that the production team didn’t care much about portraying things honestly.
A fourth person interjected, “Not moved by the orphan’s tale. Truly, folks, the film had been released a full decade prior to her story becoming public knowledge in 2019 (which was years after the movie came out).
Prior to that incident, she was completely unknown. The similarity with the film lies in the assumption that her adoptive parents might have utilized the movie as a pretext or means to perpetuate their deceit.
On March 19, 2025, the highly-anticipated series “Good American Family” premieres on Hulu.
