Good news for fans of ! This week, you can finally see the behind-the-scenes story of how Back to the Future: The Musical was created, following the popular franchise’s move to the stage.

A Future on Stage Dives Into Back to the Future: The Musical
As a huge movie fan, I was really excited to hear about this new documentary, A Future on Stage. It’s directed by Brian Stillman, who did Igniting the Spark – The Story of Magic: The Gathering, and it comes from the team at Nacelle – you probably know them from shows like The Toys That Made Us and The Movies That Made Us. What’s even cooler is that Bob Gale, one of the original writers and producers of Back to the Future, teamed up with Nacelle and Stillman to make it happen!
Bob Gale, co-writer of Back to the Future, expressed his surprise at the musical’s global success, saying he never imagined it would sell out performances worldwide. He noted that while making the original movie was a huge challenge, bringing the musical to life was even more difficult, and a new documentary showcases the struggles everyone faced during the process.
Michael J. Fox Is Featured in the Documentary
The documentary A Future on Stage features interviews with Robert Zemeckis, the director of Back to the Future, and actor Michael J. Fox. It also includes insights from the creative team and cast of Back to the Future: The Musical, such as Casey Likes, Roger Bart, Liana Hunt, Jelani Remy, Nathaniel Hackmann, Mikaela Secada, and Merrit David Janes. Other interviewees include screenwriter Bob Gale, musical producer Colin Ingram, director John Rando, and production designer Tim Hatley.
I recently saw the stage adaptation of ‘Back to the Future,’ and let me tell you, it’s a blast! Robert Zemeckis and Alan Silvestri, along with Glen Ballard, really nailed the musical numbers – there’s original music that’s fantastic, but they smartly weave in the classics we all know and love from the movie, like “The Power of Love,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Earth Angel,” and of course, “Back in Time.” The show was a huge hit over in the West End, winning an Olivier Award, and the Broadway production was also a critical success, earning two Tony nominations. If you’re a fan of the film, you absolutely won’t be disappointed.
The first film in this popular series is considered a classic. It stars Michael J. Fox as a teenager who accidentally travels back in time in a car turned time machine, created by his friend, scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd). His time travel could erase his own future if he interferes with his parents’ first meeting (played by Crispin Glover and Lea Thompson). The movie’s success led to two follow-up films, as well as a cartoon show, video games, comics, and other related media.
A Future on Stage drops on Mar. 24, 2026.
