As a film enthusiast with a penchant for heartwarming stories that resonate deeply, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming feature film “What If.” The stellar cast, led by Lea Thompson, Kevin Pollak, Leanne Melissa Bishop, and Aaron Ashmore, promises to breathe life into this profoundly moving tale of self-discovery, identity, and the complexities of family.
Actors Lea Thompson (“Back to the Future”), Kevin Pollak (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Leanne Melissa Bishop (“The Weight of Perfection”) and Aaron Ashmore (Ginny & Georgia) will be featured in the movie “What If,” produced by Penguin Pictures and Farpoint Films.
Under Lindsay MacKay’s guidance (“The Swearing Jar,” “Wet Bum”), the family drama was first presented to the public at the Toronto Film Festival.
Follow the story of Marley, a forty-year-old woman, as she uncovers a hospital mix-up regarding her birth. This shocking discovery sets her off on a personal quest to reinterpret what family means for her. Alongside her is an old school friend, also grappling with his own truths.
The movie was created by Bishop, with production handled by Michael P. Mason (of “The Weight of Perfection”), as well as Bishop and Kyle Bornais from Farpoint Films (“The Swearing Jar”). Peter Wetherell is the executive producer.
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the creative team behind this film boasts some seasoned Torontonians. The talented MacKay, whose debut work “Wet Bum” graced our screens in 2014 at the festival, also presented her sophomore feature “The Swearing Jar” at the 2022 event. Mason, an alumnus of the Canadian Film Centre, has a rich history of contributing to films that have been showcased not only in Toronto but also at other prominent festivals.
“What If” is currently in the pre-production phase with plans to start filming later this year.
Mason shared his immense enthusiasm about the skilled actors they’ve gathered for the project. “What If” features intricate and multidimensional characters, and this talented group is perfectly suited to infuse these roles with depth and emotion, he noted. In today’s media landscape, there’s a strong craving for genuine storytelling, and films that portray universal human experiences resonate strongly across the globe. Lindsay has an exceptional knack for character development, and we can hardly wait to witness how she collaborates with this gifted cast to transform the script into a heartfelt on-screen narrative.
Bishop expressed his excitement: “It’s a joy to collaborate with such an extraordinary group of actors on this movie that holds a special place in my heart. Each artist contributes their unique perspective, making each character more vibrant and real. To me, family is significant, and family can mean various things to different people. Many times, we seek a sense of belonging, yearning for acceptance. I hope this film encourages people to accept, appreciate, and love themselves, just as they are. I’m eager to witness the magic each one brings to the big screen.
