The fifth and concluding installment of the critically acclaimed worldwide phenomenon “Babylon Berlin” commenced filming, with Beta Film unveiling a preliminary picture featuring Volker Bruch (of “Generation War”), portraying Gereon Rath – an investigator in Weimar-era Berlin, captured on set.
In its initial four seasons, “Babylon Berlin” was sold to over 140 territories worldwide and amassed more than 94 million views on Germany’s ARD Mediathek platform. Among a multitude of accolades, the series clinched the first European Achievement in Fiction Series Award at the European Film Awards, four German Television Awards, the Grand Prize at the Seoul International Drama Awards, the Austrian Television Award Romy as “Year’s Top TV Event,” the Premios Ondas in Spain and the Magnolia Award of the Shanghai TV Festival.
The creative minds behind “Babylon Berlin,” Henk Handlogten, Achim von Borries, and Tom Tykwer, are set to come back for the show’s last installment. Lead actors Volker Bruch and Liv Lisa Fries (“Freud’s Last Season”) will also be part of the cast, joining forces once more to tackle a final joint investigation in this concluding chapter.
The initial photograph for Season 5, drawing from Volker Kutscher’s novel “The March Fallen”, offers a comprehensive summary. It reads: “Germany, January 30, 1933: Adolf Hitler assumes the role of Reich Chancellor. As the demise of the Weimar Republic nears, the most dismal era in German history unfolds. On March 5, 1933, elections will grant Hitler’s party full control. However, during these five weeks leading up to the election, every individual in Germany encounters challenging choices: to conform, to defy openly, or to escape. Meanwhile, as Gereon vanishes from sight, Charlotte delves into a baffling case of murders involving former battlefield soldiers. The series ‘Babylon Berlin’ is jointly produced by X-Filme Creative Pool, ARD Degeto, SWR, WDR, Radio Bremen, and Beta Film, with contributions from RBB. It receives funding from Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, and the German Motion Picture Fund.
