‘Babygirl’ Star Harris Dickinson on Filming Kinky Sex Scenes With Nicole Kidman: ‘We Set the Parameters’

As a seasoned film enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of cinema over the past few decades, I must say that Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson have truly outdone themselves in their latest erotic thriller “Babygirl.” The level of raw, unfiltered performances from both actors is nothing short of captivating.

Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson don’t hold back in their upcoming erotic thriller “Babygirl.”

How could they?

In the movie helmed by Halina Reijn, Nicole Kidman portrays the head of a tech firm who engages in an unconventional relationship with a younger colleague, played by Dickinson. Kidman was honored with the best actress accolade at the Venice International Film Festival in August for her performance in the A24 production.

In the movie’s most intimate and daring scenes, Lizzie Talbot, the intimacy coordinator, was instrumental in guiding the actors. As Dickinson explained during a screening of “Babygirl” at the London West Hollywood hotel on Friday, they would discuss their boundaries with Talbot first, then decide on their own within those agreed limits. The role of the intimacy coordinator is to understand each actor’s comfort level, the director’s vision, and help facilitate this in a sensitive manner without disrupting the actual scene.

Following the Academy Museum Gala’s movie screening, I inquired from Kidman about what she found most difficult regarding the film. She chuckled and replied, “The entire project,” but then clarified, “Achieving justice for it, striving to be open, raw, and accessible each day to delve deeper into its complexities. The essence of this movie made it such that it could either be incredibly exposed or guarded, and if the latter, the connection would be lost. When I spoke with Helena, I simply requested a secure environment and pleaded not to be portrayed foolishly.

In a particular scene, Dickinson is seen dancing rather freely, almost without clothing, in a hotel room to George Michael’s “Father Figure.” Reijn didn’t provide any rehearsals prior. Dickinson explained jovially, “That was just me moving.” Halina had chosen the song and told him, “Just dance,” so he simply found a rhythm. It’s possible he had a small drink beforehand. But it was an awkward moment for him.

Dickinson frequently found himself in disbelief, constantly checking if it was real that he was acting alongside Kidman in a film. “In a roundabout way, I’d ask her questions like, ‘What was it like working with Stanley Kubrick?’ I couldn’t help but be in awe of the fact that she is such an iconic figure in cinema,” he shared.

Nicole Kidman was far from aloof in Hollywood. As Dickinson put it, “She’s like the most nurturing, welcoming performer to act alongside.” She establishes the atmosphere on set and makes it effortless to be open and humorous because she is so daring. She’s so courageous, and she does things that leave you wondering, ‘What just happened?’ It’s hard to even comprehend it.

He added, ‘She has a natural knack for being playful,’ which makes the whole filming process effortless.
