In the climax of the 1923 Season 2, a significant baby – who could easily be mistaken for another John – is presented as a crucial member in the Dutton family lineage. (Caution: spoilers lie ahead!)
As the 1923 season finale approached, it was revealed that two babies were expected: Alex’s and Liz’s. However, during the last episode, only the birth of Alex and Spencer’s son was shown.
At last, we’ve unraveled one of the most intriguing enigmas in Yellowstone’s history, though it arrives with a price (we’re still grappling with the aftermath of Alex’s tragic demise). This development could pave the way for significant advancements within the series.
So, who is the baby at the end of the prequel series, and why is he such a big deal?
Who is the baby in 1923?
The baby born in 1923 Season 2 – Alex and Spencer’s son – is John Dutton II.
Incorrect, the character you’re referring to isn’t the same John as played by Kevin Costner. Within the Yellowstone series, there are three John Duttons: John I (Spencer’s brother who passed away in Season 1 of 1923), John II (father of Kevin Costner’s character), and John III, who is portrayed by Kevin Costner himself.
Alex welcomes the arrival of their second child, whom they name John in honor of Spencer’s late brother, who passed away a year prior.

In an unexpected turn of events, John II is born before his due date, with doctors predicting a grim outcome for him. Yet, it’s not John who meets an early demise, but Alex. Alex chooses to forego life-saving surgery and delivers the baby instead, opting to sacrifice her own life for his birth.
At just six months old upon his birth, John II miraculously survives and is later spotted being cradled by Cara on their ranch as she feeds him milk from a goat.
It’s clear that if it weren’t for John II, we wouldn’t have John Dutton III, which means he plays a crucial role in the Dutton family picture.
It’s evident that without John II, there would be no John Dutton III, making him an essential piece of the Dutton family puzzle.
In the central narrative of Yellowstone, we see his final moments as an elderly character. This occurs when John III accompanies him into the mountains, where they share deep conversations before the older man breathes his last in John’s embrace.
How many sons does Spencer have?
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share that I have a pair of sons, just like Spencer. One is John Dutton II, a character I’ve come to know quite well, and there’s another son who remains unseen but whose existence was subtly revealed in Elsa’s closing narration during the finale.
It’s unexpected, as no character within the Yellowstone timeline has previously spoken about John Dutton III having an uncle.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: Elsa mentions that Spencer didn’t remarry, but he ended up with a widow who eventually had a child by him. We’re not given her name, but here’s an interesting twist – there are two graves in the Dutton family plot that don’t correspond to anyone we’ve encountered before: Chance and Ned Dutton.
Given the limited details at hand, it seems plausible that John Dutton II and his brother could take center stage in the forthcoming prequel, set in the year 1944.
