As soon as the trailer for “Godzilla vs Kong” revealed a Baby Kong, fans were captivated by the potential storylines. Many franchises have thrived after adding cute young characters to their roster, such as Grogu in “The Mandalorian” and, briefly, Baby Groot in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” It’s no surprise that the MonsterVerse following jumped at the opportunity to see a baby version of one of its iconic monsters.
In the following footage, it was established that Suko was indeed a baby ape. Despite his adorable demeanor, his presence hinted at something far more ominous: vengeful apes dwelling within the Hollow Earth. As the story unfolded, it became clear that Suko played a pivotal role in Kong’s life-altering journey. In essence, Little Kong proved to be a crucial figure who helped save the world. Furthermore, he served as an indication that there may be many more unsuspecting heroes lurking within the MonsterVerse.
What Is Suko’s Origin Story?
Baby Kong Is Native to Hollow Earth
In the movie, director Adam Wingard expands on the concept of the Hollow Earth as Kong ventures into hostile territory. Here, he encounters Suko, but unfortunately, a smaller Kong-like creature attacks him instead. Larger apes join in the fray, using bones as weapons against Kong. Although Kong manages to fend off his attackers, it’s disturbing to witness him using Suko as if she were a whip during the battle. The brutality of this wild realm is emphasized by Kong’s violent actions towards other apes, especially with Suko serving as a weapon. After the fight, Kong shows affection for the youngster and escorts him back to their base. It becomes apparent that the small Kong is part of a captive camp run by the malevolent Skull King, where apes are enslaved, mistreated, and even killed for amusement.
In the meantime, Suko believes Kong might be able to stop Skar King’s violent rule, demonstrating Kong’s intelligence. Earlier, Kong had shown a keen mind when he led him to a river to encounter a giant, serpentine Titan. It seemed like Suko was testing Kong for more than just loyalty; he wanted to gauge his strength as well. After realizing this, Suko develops a bond with Kong. Kong then offers him some of the Titan to eat, which indicates that Kong is a trustworthy Titan for Suko. Suko had also observed kindness in Kong when he tried to save an attacker. However, upon witnessing his friend being thrown into molten lava by Skar King, Suko loses self-control and poise. The young Kong has been suffering under this tyranny for too long, and though he’s strong-hearted, he can’t physically overpower the ruler. It is here that Kong steps in to serve as both a weapon and an ally.
What Is Suko’s Purpose?
Suko’s Role in Godzilla x Kong is Constantly in Flux
Throughout the movie, Suko’s goals constantly shift. Initially, he is a scout who is prepared to eliminate Kong, but later transforms into an aspiring hero aiming to free his people. In their battle against the Skar King, Kong performs admirably, but encounters trouble when the ice Titan Shimo causes frostbite damage to one of Kong’s hands. With Kong injured, Suko steps up to support him and act as a protective figure. Fortunately, just in time, Suko, who translates as “essential child” in Japanese phonetically, indicates an escape route when he becomes panicked. Thankfully, Kong manages to escape by using traps to fend off the pursuing forces.
As a cinephile, I find myself drawn to the character of Suko in this epic tale. When things go awry, it’s Suko who steps up and uses clever tactics, like hurling boulders from precipices, to vanquish our foes. With Kong yearning for aid to mend his wounds inflicted by Ilene and Jia, Suko escorts him to the Iwi tribe. The little one, Mini Kong, is more than just a companion; he’s innocent yet feisty when the situation calls for it.
Suko has found a new purpose now – to be both protector and assistant to Kong. This newfound role brings a spark of hope to Kong’s heroic spirit, as he’s been longing for family throughout his journey. Lonely on Skull Island, and then plunged into despair in the Hollow Earth, Suko has rekindled Kong’s joy and encouraged him to free others from their bonds.
This renewed sense of purpose gives Suko confidence too, as he sees that Kong believes in his abilities. Together, they make an unstoppable team, lighting up the darkest corners with hope and camaraderie.
How Does Suko Fare in Battle?
Suko Helps Kong Succeed in Overthrowing the Skar King
Beyond the confines of the trap, Suko demonstrates a graceful dexterity. He carries within him a furious temper and a quick-paced frenzy that hint at his ability to stir up turmoil. Tensions escalate when the Skar King brings Shimo and their ape army to assault the temple. Their intention is to exploit the portals found there, ascending to the surface and eliminating Godzilla, but before that, they aim to eliminate Kong and Suko’s companions. As Godzilla joins the fray, Suko receives much-needed physical assistance. The Iwi have manipulated gravity, enabling everyone to float and engage in combat. The reduced gravity enables Mini Kong to navigate effortlessly, strike the Skar King’s soldiers, and even hurl rocks at them. His aim is remarkably accurate, as he learned from watching Kong throw an enemy from a distance when they first met. The battle is intense yet heartwarming, with Suko emitting his distinctive war cries, which are less resonant than Kong’s.
It’s evident that Suko aspires to follow in Kong’s footsteps, from his aggressive posturing to his actions on the battlefield. His defining moment arrives when he spots Kong’s ax lodged near the portal mouth. Realizing Kong needs it and his distinctive fin for the impending fight against Shimo and the Skar King, Suko bravely plunges into the rift with the ax in hand, unsure of where he is going or what awaits him on the other side. However, one thing is certain – Suko’s actions demonstrate selflessness.
Suko earns his pinnacle moment when he leaps out and shatters the mind-control shard that the Skar King had been using on Shimo. This decisive action shifts the battle’s momentum, as powerful Shimo retaliates against the Skar King by freezing him. This allows Kong to defeat the tyrannical ape, reinforcing the idea that without Suko, the battle would not have been won. So, while Baby Kong might seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, he has penned the most triumphant chapters in the MonsterVerse.
Suko Is a Great Addition To the MonsterVerse
The Mini Kong Is Symbolic of Hope and Posterity
It’s difficult not to admire Suko and the ideals he represents. His journey is complex and profound, and Suko offers Kong something he’s longed for: optimism, motivation, and a vision of a brighter tomorrow. With Suko by his side, Kong embraces a hopeful future as they rejoice with their freed ape allies. Even Shimo, once an adversary, becomes an ally, demonstrating that even from adversity, good can emerge. Suko’s narrative shares similarities with certain films, but it transcends species boundaries. The young Kong realizes that others like him are at risk due to the Skar King’s destruction, so he feels compelled to intervene. Suko represents a more endearing version of Kong and Godzilla in a heroic sense, as he is a baby Titan safeguarding the ecosystem and preserving the delicate balance between order and tranquility. He acknowledges the potential disruption of the food chain, so he adapts much like Kong and Godzilla would.
In contrast to these titans who were involved in numerous wars and showcased their dominance as leaders, Suko is more relatable due to his human-like qualities. Although he may lack power compared to others, he compensates with an acute intuition. Suko’s backstory of enslavement and a tumultuous childhood, marked by abuse, demonstrates the numerous obstacles he had to overcome, particularly on an emotional level. As a child, he faced mental and physical challenges that other heroes did not encounter. This is what makes this young prodigy appealing to fans, especially given the widespread popularity of Mini Kong memes. Suko exudes compassion, serving as a reminder that one should never underestimate underdogs.
Godzilla x Kong’s Mini Kong Compared to Other Kong Children
King Kong’s First Cinematic Son Was Also Known as Kiko
During the production phase of the movie “Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire,” whispers circulated that it might be a remake or draw inspiration from “Son of Kong.” This 1933 film served as a sequel to the original “King Kong” and introduced a massive albino gorilla, although he was never officially confirmed as Kong’s son. The small but already towering over humans young ape (who went by “Kiko” in production notes but was simply called “Little Kong” or “Baby” in the movie) shared the same fondness for human women as his larger counterpart. Compared to Suko, the Mini Kong from “Godzilla vs. Kong,” Kiko was about the same size, but he had a more mature appearance. Despite being orange instead of white and having a different role, it appears that Suko’s name is a tribute to Kiko, the first Mini Kong.
1986 brought about the emergence of another offspring of King Kong in the movie “King Kong Lives”, a sequel to the King Kong remake from a decade before. In this film, a female Kong (named Lady Kong) was discovered in Borneo and transported to the United States for a blood transfusion with her male counterpart. Following his recovery, they mated while in captivity, and the story concludes with the birth of Baby Kong, who was already as large as an adult typical gorilla. He had dark fur instead of the orange and gangly appearance of Suko, who would appear some years later. Although Baby Kong may not be considered a true son of Kong, Suko still makes a valuable ally and is one of the most cherished newcomers to the MonsterVerse—and with promising prospects.
King Kong Is Not the Only Kaiju with a Mini Version
Godzilla’s Has Multiple Little Relatives
In the movie “Son of Godzilla,” a character known colloquially as Baby Godzilla, or Minilla, was introduced. After hatching, Minilla was rescued and nurtured by Godzilla himself, leading to a powerful bond between them. You can find Minilla in not only “Godzilla: Final Wars” but also other films, TV shows, video games, and various titles within the extended franchise. However, it’s important to note that Minilla isn’t the sole miniature Godzilla character out there.
Another notable instance is Godzilla Junior, debuting in the film “Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II“. Similar to Minilla, Junior has been reimagined several times since his creation. Also stemming from Minilla is Godzooky, a character introduced in the 1978 animated TV series “Godzilla“. Despite being a cartoon character for kids, Godzooky possesses powers similar to those of the small, live-action Godzillas. To round off this adorable ensemble of mascots, Toho and MonsterVerse could develop plots featuring miniature versions of both King Kong and Godzilla.
What Is Suko’s Future In the MonsterVerse?
The Baby Kong May Eventually Replace the Real Deal
A new project involving a movie is under development, but details about it are scarce. This includes the roster of monsters, which might or might not include a mini Kong. It’s plausible that the next significant MonsterVerse film could be another collaboration between Godzilla and Kong, as their partnership has been instrumental to the brand over the past few years. Similarly, it enables Toho to produce standalone Godzilla films like “Godzilla Minus One,” paving the way for the MonsterVerse to explore different paths. These could encompass further team-ups and cross-overs similar to the style of “King Kong vs. Godzilla.
If Kong reappears, it’s probable that Suko will too, given her promising outlook. However, if Suko fulfills her potential, it could signal the approaching end for Kong himself, considering his advanced age even among the Titans, as indicated by his graying fur. The emergence of a young Kong like Suko suggests a father-son dynamic, and it seems likely that he may be preparing to hand over his role. Such a development would draw upon themes from various films featuring both King Kong and Godzilla.
For example, the movie “King Kong Lives” was not well-liked, and Kong died following the birth of his son. The pair, along with the mother, then left to live tranquilly in a nature preserve. Similarly, the Heisei Godzilla series concluded with “Godzilla vs. Destroyah,” during which Godzilla perished due to a nuclear explosion. However, this event also revived his dying son (who had been critically injured by Destroyah), transforming him into a fully-grown Godzilla who would likely have inherited the role in that continuity.
It’s possible that Suko could experience growth similar to what we’ve seen, making an appearance in the MonsterVerse in a more mature form. In this advanced stage, he would demonstrate strong leadership, his playful and mischievous nature acting as a unifying force among various Titan species. If Kong meets his demise, Suko could take over the role, serving as Kong’s successor for future storylines. Essentially, this development could pave the way for a sequel that never came to fruition in “King Kong Lives,” while also subtly referencing characters like Kiko and Godzilla Jr.
In the MonsterVerse, they might follow a similar pattern with Godzilla, possibly introducing characters like Godzilla Jr., Minilla, or even Godzooky as their counterparts. Since Kong and Godzilla are well-known and iconic Titans, it makes sense that any legacy in this universe would revolve around them significantly. Notably, the current Mothra in MonsterVerse is an offspring from one introduced and perished in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. So, future projects might involve miniature versions of Kong and even Godzilla.
