Ayo Edebiri to Write and in Talks to Star in ‘Barney’ Live-Action Movie From A24, Mattel and Daniel Kaluuya

Actress Ayo Edebiri, famously known for her role in “The Bear”, has been appointed to pen the script for the forthcoming live-action “Barney” film and is also engaged in discussions regarding her potential appearance in the movie.

Barney” is being collaboratively developed and manufactured by A24 and Daniel Kaluuya‘s 59% Productions, in conjunction with the intellectual property (IP) owner of Barney, Mattel Films. Kevin McKeon and Andrew Scannell are responsible for supervising the project on behalf of Mattel Films, while Robbie Brenner will produce for Mattel Films along with A24. Daniel Kaluuya and Rowan Riley will serve as producers for 59% Productions in this venture.

Although Kaluuya serves as the main producer for the upcoming film, insiders have informed EbMaster that he won’t be acting in it together with Edebiri. The specifics of the storyline are currently confidential.

Starting in 1988, the TV series “Barney & Friends” ran for 14 seasons on PBS, concluding its run in November 2010.

Back in November 2019, when the project was initially unveiled, Robbie Brenner from Mattel Films expressed that collaborating with Kaluuya would give them an opportunity to explore ‘Barney’ in a fresh way, one that would catch viewers off guard and defy their expectations.

Following McKeon’s initial description of the “Barney” movie as an “A24-type” project, followed by a retraction, Mattel has generally been quiet about the film. However, in an interview with EbMaster last October, Mattel’s chief franchise officer Josh Silverman hinted at the unique narrative direction of the movie compared to Max’s latest animated revamp of the “Barney” series, while also mentioning a strong collaboration between their television and film teams.

Silverman stated, “We’re tightly aligned and working in harmony on this. Robbie Brenner, who heads our film division, is outstanding, and we’ve spent a lot of time together discussing this. We aim for a coherent storyline. In this instance, the ‘Barney’ movie will embody its true essence, and this series, we decided to maintain continuity with the original. Authenticity is crucial; if it’s not authentic, we won’t proceed. We aim to preserve the authenticity, the core identity of ‘Barney’, but also to update it.

Known primarily for her Emmy-winning performance on FX’s “The Bear,” actress Edebiri has also lent her voice to Envy in Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.” Upcoming projects include a role in director Luca Guadagnino’s film “After the Hunt,” where she will star alongside Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield.

She is repped by Range Media Partners, CAA, ID PR and Del Shaw Moonves.
