As a seasoned gamer with decades of RPG escapades under my belt, the tantalizing prospect of Avowed’s numerous, double-digit endings has me positively giddy. I’ve seen the dance of destiny unfold in games like Fallout and Dragon Age, but never have I been so eager to dive headfirst into a labyrinth of choices that could potentially shape my gaming life for years to come.
According to game director Carrie Patel, the exclusive role-playing game for Xbox, developed by Obsidian, will boast a significant number of distinct endings, totaling more than ten.
During Gamescom, Patel had a chat with IGN about the upcoming first-person fantasy RPG, and one of the questions she was posed was regarding the number of possible endings for players to experience.
Patel explained, “It’s quite challenging to predict, but let me clarify that our final slides are in the double digits. The way these slides play out can vary greatly due to numerous possible combinations. Since this is an Obsidian game, your ending is essentially a reflection of all the choices you make throughout the game, across various segments of content, based on what you come across and how you respond when you find it.”
What Patel is explaining seems reminiscent of conclusions in other RPGs such as Fallout, for which Obsidian has prior experience (having developed Fallout: New Vegas). Instead, this ending style presents a sequence of various outcomes at the game’s end, demonstrating the impact of a player’s choices on different factions, narratives, and characters.
Patel further elaborated more on the choices players will be making in Avowed.
In discussing the game, Patel mentioned that there will be numerous decisions to be made regarding where one’s ultimate loyalty belongs, and whom one stands by in the final stages. He expressed enthusiasm for players to delve into these choices and craft their unique narrative.
In focus now are the companion characters for Avowed, as revealed by Obsidian Entertainment. These characters players will interact with throughout their fantasy journey have a voice cast attached to them. One of these characters, Kai, is voiced by Brandon Keener, who RPG enthusiasts might recognize from his role as Garrus Vakarian in BioWare’s Mass Effect series.
Initially planned for a 2024 launch, the game “Avowed” has been postponed to February 15, 2025. This shift is due to a desire from Xbox to provide “players’ backlogs with some space to breathe.”
