Avowed Will Be 30FPS On Xbox Series X, Allowing For "Juicier" Visual Effects

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Obsidian Entertainment’s decision to target 30 frames per second for Avowed is a wise choice, especially for a first-person, single-player game like this one. The focus on visual effects and lighting over a smooth 60fps is a trade-off I can get behind, given my old eyes and the nostalgia of playing games from yesteryears that ran at a similar frame rate.

Obsidian Entertainment, known for its development work, has disclosed that their upcoming first-person RPG aims to maintain a steady 30 frames per second on both Xbox Series X and S consoles. The studio made this choice at the start of development, which in turn enabled them to enhance the game’s visual effects significantly, making them more vibrant and impactful.

Matt Hansen, the art director, mentioned during the Iron Lords podcast (via IGN) that they aim for a frame rate of 30fps as a minimum. He explained that this is expected due to the game being a first-person, single-player title, and sacrificing some frames allows them to enhance visual effects, lighting, and other aspects. Essentially, they made a choice to focus on improving visual quality over maintaining a 60fps frame rate, and they’re pleased with the result. The game runs smoothly considering its high visual density, which was their primary objective all along.

Avowed becomes part of an array of initial games released on the Xbox Series X|S that feature a more enhanced cinematic frame rate. Starfield, a space RPG, is one such game, as it initially ran at 30fps on the Xbox Series X|S for consistent performance. However, in May, a 60fps mode was introduced for Xbox Series X consoles, and this week, Xbox Series S owners received a performance upgrade.

First planned for release towards the end of this year, Avowed has been rescheduled to debut on February 18, 2025. A fortunate outcome of this delay is that Avowed will no longer go head-to-head with numerous other high-profile games such as Dragon Age: Veilguard, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. The game promises a rich replay value, offering at least ten distinct endings for players to explore.
