At the beginning of Avowed, you undergo an assassination attempt – receiving an arrow straight to the heart, from a renegade called Ygwulf. Through some unknown benefactor’s mercy, you miraculously live, leading you on a mission to locate and confront your would-be assassin.
In time, you track down Ygwulf hidden in the subterranean chambers of Paradis, a place where he’s taken aback by your presence, as he thought you were dead. Convinced he was following divine guidance, now confronted by your sword, he surrenders to your decision-making process.
So, what’s the right call – vengeance or mercy?
Killing Ygwulf
As a gamer, I’ve chosen the direct path of vengeance against Ygwulf. After all, he was the one who tried to take me down, so it seems only fair to give him a taste of his own medicine.
Marius supports this choice, and the subsequent conflict places you opposite Ygwulf and his rebellious associates. If you’re prepared, the skirmish can be handled, although it will be tough.
Should you choose to support the Ambassador by eliminating Yfwulf, he will grant you 1,500 gold pieces and further solidify Aedyr’s control in the area. This decision of yours will earn the admiration of Inquisitor Lodwyn for your decisiveness.
Later on, when you come across dissident groups, like during the Food Theft mission at Emerald Stair, they will be aggressive towards you. This could make some interactions trickier.
If fighting isn’t really your forte but you still want Ygwulf eliminated, you could reveal his whereabouts to the Ambassador instead, allowing Aedyr to deal with him on your behalf.
Sparing Ygwulf
If you decide to show mercy towards the assassin, you can ask him and his companions to depart, expressing regret for the heinous actions carried out by the Steel Garrote. He accepts your gesture graciously, rewarding you with a chunk of Adra and 625 gold coins before slipping away into exile.

Besides educating Ygwulf, this influence on him may affect The Voice, Sapadal, enlightening them on compassion – possibly swaying a pivotal late-game choice.
Both options don’t significantly change the narrative of Avowed, but they influence how different factions view you. If you want the favor of Aedyr, consider eliminating Ygwulf. On the other hand, if you prefer a more subtle, peaceful approach, it might be wiser to let him live.
