In many Role-Playing Games (RPGs), magic can be a tricky tool, but the freshly released game Avowed by Obsidian Entertainment is giving it a unique and entertaining twist. Unlike most games where mages are either healers or support characters, or deal magical damage, in this game, they take on a more versatile role.
In the latest role-playing game from Obsidian, titled Avowed, players have stumbled upon an engaging feature: magic has a tangible impact on the game’s environment. One such example of this interaction is when players can seemingly walk on water by casting Ice/Frost spells in close proximity to bodies of water.
Avowed adds depth to mages in a new way
In contrast to conventional RPGs where magic is primarily employed for long-range attacks or utility purposes, Avowed stands out by integrating it into the core, moment-to-moment gameplay. Players can opt for Fighter, Ranger, and Wizard roles, but some players have discovered unconventional uses for mages. For instance, a user on X discovered an interesting trick: if you cast an ice shield on yourself, you can technically walk on water.
In the game Avowed, magic significantly impacts the surroundings. This isn’t a common feature in many other games.
Not only can you generate your own surfaces, but you also have the ability to traverse water as if it were solid ground.

In the video, it’s evidently quicker than swimming, and this speed boost might not seem very useful at first glance, but it significantly enhances the game’s complexity. It also underscores the game’s focus on recognizing and rewarding innovative play, inspiring players to explore alternative uses for their skills beyond combat situations.
In games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, there were enchanted boots that allowed waterwalking. However, in the case of Obsidian’s creation, this ability has been integrated into the spell system itself. This means you’re not bound to using it only with specific equipment and can instead decide when to activate it. Similar to Skyrim, additional exciting features can likely be added via modding.
In Avowed by Obsidian, you’ll have an opportunity that I’ve longed for in many Fantasy Role-Playing Games:
Quickly switch between Magic, Firearms, and Melee combat without having to navigate through menus. This RPG promises to be a must-play on both Xbox and PC platforms.

In comparison to other contemporary role-playing games (RPGs) like Dragon Age: Veilguard and Dragon’s Dogma 2, Avowed stands out due to its unique approach to magic integration. While these games do feature magic, the way it’s utilized isn’t as seamless as Obsidian has managed. The developers achieved this by crafting a system where magic serves dual purposes: not only is it a combat tool, but it also enhances exploration aspects of the game.
The game hasn’t made a big splash, but it’s not bad at all
The game “Avowed” has had a strong debut, with the number of players on Steam peaking at over 17,000. However, it’s important to note that this figure is lower than other popular games because it was also released on Xbox Game Pass on the same day. Therefore, its Steam numbers don’t compare favorably to current blockbusters like “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2”.
The game debuts in an era where RPGs are expanding in length and complexity, which sometimes reduces their accessibility. Many popular games such as Starfield and Baldur’s Gate 3 consume a significant amount of time, deterring players who aren’t sure if they will enjoy the game. However, Avowed offers a more concise experience without compromising on depth.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that Avowed has been receiving more criticism than it deserves since its release. It seems to have unintentionally become a target for some online hate waves, which has made it somewhat overlooked by many in the gaming community. However, with its unique mechanics and depth, it’s a game that I believe is truly worth giving a chance.
